Iraqi gays under threat amid brutal killings

Young Iraqi teenagers widely perceived to be gay are being brutally killed in Baghdad with Shiite militias distributing lists of targets warning of further assaults, officials and human rights groups say.

At least 15 teenagers, described as "emo"s for their tight-fitting black clothes and alternative hairstyles, have been stoned, beaten to death or shot dead in the past month, medics say.

Human rights groups say the toll is far higher amid accusations of a cover-up by security forces.

Witnesses in the conservative Shiite Muslim bastion of Sadr City in north Baghdad say a militia group calling itself the "Brigades of Anger" has posted leaflets naming 22 youths to be "punished".

Medical officials said at least 15 had already been killed in the past month, including seven who were stoned to death, five who were shot and one who was beaten to death.

"Police generally take care of all these incidents," said one of the officials, who declined to be named. "They don't like medics or ambulances to take them. Two days ago, the body of a teenager was found in Bayaa -- he was evacuated by police."

In Western youth culture, the term "emo" refers only to dress and musical preference and carries no connotation about a person's sexual orientation. In Iraq, however, the term is widely conflated with being gay, which remains taboo in the conservative Muslim country.

The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, based in New York, said a "new surge of anti-gay violence" since February had seen nearly 40 people kidnapped, tortured, and murdered.

Towing my weight: Partnering with commercial shipping for whale and dolphin research

I didn?t give much thought to shipping until I started doing my PhD on whales and dolphins. Food magically appeared onto store shelves out of thin air, where I bought it. I don?t think most of us give much thought to where our food comes from, but once I started paying attention how things get around, it was hard to stop. This is especially true on a remote tropical island, like Hawaii. Here, every once in a while, certain foods aren?t to be found for love or money. My steps echo in the empty bread isle, and when I beg for just one slice of delicious whole grain the store employee will say, ?Sorry, no can. Bread shipment comes Tuesday.?

About 85% of the food consumed in Hawaii is imported from somewhere else. Most food arrives in Honolulu on a container ship, which is then unloaded and redistributed into shipping barges. These barges are pulled by tugboats to what are known here as the ?neighbor islands? of Kauai, Molokai, Maui, Lanai, and the Big Island. The shipping barges are very different than the container ships. First of all, they can?t get anywhere on their own ? they need a tugboat to pull them. The tugs I work on have a maximum travel speed of about 8 knots (10 miles per hour), which is quite a bit slower than the typical 20-25 knot travel speed of a container ship.

A tugboat towing a barge is optimally designed for my type of research, which uses underwater sound to find whales and dolphins. I record these underwater sounds through a hydrophone, which hangs off the back of a barge. Sound goes up a cable from the hydrophone, and is recorded onto a custom electronic recorder, called an EAR (Ecological Acoustic Recorder [A]). The barge is towed from a cable, about 900 feet behind the tugboat. This distance gets my hydrophone far away from the noise of the tug. Another advantage is that tug boats travel back and forth between the Hawaiian Islands twice a week, which means that if I had a couple of handy clones to share the work I could collect acoustic data from Kauai to the Big Island one hundred times per year. Since I don?t have any clones (or interns, for that matter), I only go out every 11-14 days. I?ve been on a tugboat 74 days in the last year, which, according to the crew, is about enough for me to get hired.

Why bother spending so much time on a tugboat listening for cetaceans (whales and dolphins), especially in Hawaii? The truth is, we actually don?t know much about cetaceans in Hawaii. Most of the knowledge of Hawaiian cetaceans actually concentrates on a few well-studied species: the humpback whale and the Hawaiian spinner dolphin. These species are frequently found near to shore or in calm waters: spinner dolphins ?rest? in near-shore bays, and humpback whales spend the winter in Maui?s calm western lee.

In addition to these well-studied species are 23 other species that occur in Hawaii but are less well studied, such as false killer and minke whales [B],. These remaining deep-water species are less well known simply because they don?t often hang out in nice, calm water close to the shore. The water offshore in Hawaii can be dangerously rough. Wind and swell builds up across half the Pacific Ocean, creating the famous surf of Jaws and Pipeline. These conditions are too dangerous to take a small (westward lees of the islands (the prevailing wind in Hawaii is from the East).

The Big Island of Hawaii creates the largest lee, allowing researchers to get far out to sea. In contrast to these relatively calm leeward waters, the conditions between the main Hawaiian Islands are, to use a surfer term, gnarly. Wind traveling across the Pacific Ocean is diverted around the volcanoes of Maui and the Big Island and rushes through the gap between them. Wind speeds in the channels can average about 25 miles per hour (Beufort Wind Scale 6). At these wind speeds, foam and rough water makes it very difficult to see whales and dolphins.

Fortunately, even when you can?t see cetaceans, you can often hear them. Dolphins and whales use sound underwater for communication and predation. It is actually easier to find some species using sound than vision [C]. This is where the tugboat comes in again ? these boats are large enough to safely cross the dangerous waters of the channels, and they do it year-round. In addition, because they are going anyway ? I can just hop on with my equipment and gather data, without having to spend thousands of dollars on renting a boat big enough to cross the channels safely. They even give me a place to sleep and feed me (a big deal for a graduate student).

After I make the recordings, I can feed the cetacean sounds into a computer program, which will analyze their characteristics to give a species prediction [D]. Doing research on vessels that are used for commercial enterprise is known as using ?platforms of opportunity.? These platforms are already there, so I am taking the opportunity to use them. Other oceanic projects using platforms of opportunity has included plankton research from container ships and visual cetacean surveys from ferries, but these projects are relatively rare.

As a blonde haired, blue-eyed woman, I get a lot of paternal advice about working with the guys on the tugboat. ?Fatherly advice? is one of the more annoying aspects of being a young woman scientist. I already have a (wonderful) father, and he?s got the fatherly advice market cornered, thanks. Young women in science don?t need fatherly advice ? they need good mentors. This advice mostly consisted of warnings about how tough the tugboat crew would be. I wasn?t sure what to expect on the first trip, but I discovered that the guys are just as variable as anyone else. Yes, there?s a higher likelihood of teriyaki pig?s feet in the fridge (I tried it, seriously YUCK) than in my house. But once you get to know these guys, we actually have a lot in common. The captain of the tug I was on last week volunteers at a National Park to replant native plants. The A.B. (able-bodied sailor) raises local beef. One of the mates can?t stop showing me pictures of his dog, whose name is Princess (I swear). They?re not all angels or teddy bears, but neither are they the enemy.

I travel with the tugboats on two of their routes around the Hawaiian Islands; between Honolulu and Kauai, and between Honolulu and the Big Island. If the weather is good, I stand outside and look for cetaceans. If the weather is bad (waves are coming over the bow and splashing me ? the crew gets a kick out of this), I come into the bridge and watch as best I can. When I get to the Big Island, I climb from the tugboat to the barge, and pull my recording equipment out of the water to download the sounds and make sure everything is working properly.

I haven?t analyzed all of my data yet. It takes a lot of time to listen to 864 hours of recordings. Regardless of what my data shows, I hope that the information can help inform research in the future. Are we missing a huge chunk of whale and dolphin activity by sticking to the nice smooth water, or is that where they hang out, anyway? I also get very excited about the idea of using platforms of opportunity on a larger scale. Commercial ships cross most of the world?s waters ? imagine if every one of those vessels was equipped with a device that listened for dolphins. Of course, that brings up another host of problems; including the fact that shipping noise stresses whales, and that many whales are killed when ships hit them.

Is it possible for a moral scientist to partner with commercial shippers that can cause this kind of harm to their study species? Fortunately, I don?t have to wrestle with that problem yet. To the best of my knowledge, none of the tugs I work on has ever hit a whale, and their traveling speed of less than 10 knots makes them less likely to hit one. I?ll cross that moral bridge once the big shipping companies let me start recording from their boats. However, my experience working with the tugboat crews has convinced me that if we don?t at least try to communicate and work together, we?ll always fail.

If you're planning a cruise in 2012, chances are high that you'll be traveling to the Caribbean. According to CruiseCompete.com's annual report, nine of the?10 most popular cruise ports in the world are in the Caribbean (or close enough to count).

The website's list, which is compiled from cruise quotes requested by potential customers, shows that Alaska is also a perennial favorite for cruisers. Several Inside Passage ports made the cut, with Juneau coming out as the most requested cruise stop in the 50 states.

With so many people wanting to go to the same places, you might worry about crowds?but you don't need to. It turns out that even the hottest port has a few places where you can get off the beaten path. Here are some recommendations that will make you feel like you're in the know, before you get off the ship.

1. Nassau, Bahamas
Just 180 miles from Miami, the Bahamas are usually the first or last stop on an eastern Caribbean cruise (even though the archipelago is technically in the Atlantic). People love the islands ? there are approximately 700 in all ? for first-class snorkeling, casinos and fine dining, and it's top four ports are Nassau, Princess Cays, Great Stirrup Cay and Half Moon Cay, it's the most requested country in the world for cruising, according to CruiseCompete. Two of them made the list for the top?10 most visited ports in 2011, including the capital, Nassau, which is a major shopping center.

Secret: If you'd rather mingle with locals than join the crowd heading to Senor Frog's, take the Number 10 Jitney to Arawak Cay, where you'll find several stands serving up fried seafood. Go to Goldie's, and order a cold Kalik beer with some conch fritters; if you go to the back porch, sometimes you'll see workers pulling up the conch from the water.

2. Cozumel, Mexico
Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula continues to draw sun seekers who want some culture with their cruise, particularly this year when the Mayan calendar predicts the end of days. But there's plenty of room for fun, too. Cozumel, an island off the coast, offers countless snorkeling and water-based activities, as well as gorgeous beaches: Corona ads are often shot here.

Secret: Can you stand the heat? If so, the Mayan Steam Lodge/Temazcal experience ? a spiritual sauna-like ceremony that includes native rituals ? may be for you. Afterward, you'll jump into the property's freshwater cenote (underground spring) to cool off (there are also showers, if you'd prefer to rinse off there). The four-hour excursion costs $80 per person, and includes transportation to and from the ship.

3. Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
If you're on an eastern Caribbean cruise, you'll probably stop in St. Thomas, as it's one of the world's busiest cruise ports. A Mecca for duty-free shopping, the Charlotte Amalie port has plenty of jewelry, perfume, and electronics stores; check prices at a few shops before you buy to ensure the best deal. St. Thomas can also be a good place to unwind on a beach or provide a good jumping-off point for exploring the nearby island St. John, which is quieter and less developed.

Secret: While everyone else on your ship heads for the famed Magens Bay beach, pick up some groceries at Crown Bay Marina for a picnic lunch and catch a ferry to Water Island, sometimes considered the fourth Virgin Island. Not only is the sea at the island's palm-lined Honeymoon Beach calm, the cove is quiet ? you won't find the shops or tour operators here that you see on other St. Thomas beaches.?

4. Philipsburg, St. Maarten / St. Martin
One island, two cultures: With portions settled by the French and the Dutch, the island is one of the smallest to be governed by two countries (don't worry, though, almost everyone speaks English). Philipsburg, on the Dutch side, rivals St. Thomas for duty-free shopping, while the towns of Marigot and Grand Case on the French side are filled with? fine and casual restaurants with French flair where you can find dishes like escargot (snails) or bouillabaisse (fish soup).

Secret: If you don't want to join the crowds breathing jet fumes at Maho Beach, take a short cab ride to French Cul-de-Sac, where you can catch a ferry to Pinel Island (regular service starts around 9 a.m.). The uninhabited island off St. Martin has several restaurants where you can rent beach chairs, have drinks and go snorkeling; there's a designated snorkel trail in a protected marine reserve on the island's south side, where you can spot sea fans, urchins, turtle and rays among the coral.?

5. Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
Known for offshore banking, the Cayman Islands have a natural side beyond the shops of George Town. Grand Cayman is one of the few places where you can see the world's most endangered iguana, the blue iguana, and thousands of tourists converge on Stingray City to watch the sea animals. Seven Mile Beach offers an uninterrupted view of the Caribbean that seems like a postcard come to life.

Secret: If you like Jimmy Buffet music, catch the Grand Cayman's resident beach bum, the Barefoot Man (in real life, George Nowak). He plays most Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Reef Resort on the island's East End. If you don't have time to catch a show, pick up a CD for $16 in one of the souvenir shops in George Town.

6. San Juan, Puerto Rico
It's hard to escape history in Puerto Rico; its capital, San Juan, dates back to the 16th century. The immense San Felipe del Morro fortress anchors Old San Juan and Ponce de Leon, the island's first governor, is buried at the Cathedral of San Juan. If you venture off into the countryside, you'll find beaches, rain forests and a bioluminescent bay where you can kayak.

Secret: Puerto Rico's cuisine is infused with unique Latin flavors that you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere in the Caribbean. Secret: If you love stamps (or love someone who does), make a stop at the Philatelic Bureau, located on Church Folly street. The island is known for its colorful and unusual issues, which are prized by collectors.?

8. Juneau, Alaska
An Inside Passage cruise appears on many bucket lists, and no wonder. The state's scenery, particularly its magnificent glacier- and wildlife-viewing opportunities, are unparalleled. Surrounded by mountains and the sea, Juneau, the state's capital, is accessible only by water or air. Nature is all around you: Look for bears fishing in the streams near Mendenhall Glacier, and eagles nesting on the slopes of Mount Roberts.

Secret: Once you get out of downtown, cruise ship crowds disappear, or at least it feels that way; Alaska's vastness has a way of making people seem insignificant. With hiking trails and a stone labyrinth garden, the Shrine of St. Therese, on a peninsula about a 20-minute drive from Juneau (take a taxi), is a reflective place to commune with nature. Visitors often spot seals, whales, and otters nearby.?

9. Roatan, Honduras
The Bay Islands, which lie about an hour north of the Honduras mainland, have become a major attraction for cruise ships, which come for the area's colorful fish and clear, warm waters. Roatan has become the center of commercial development for the islands, and you'll find countless opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and interacting with marine life such as grouper, moray eels, turtles, and rays.

Secret: Give your tastebuds a charge with a jam and jelly tasting at Marble Hill Farms on the East End of the island. "Parent Trigger" Or Hostile Takeover Of Public Education For Profit ...

A vote on the controversial "Parent Trigger" bill has been pushed back until tomorrow in the Florida Senate.

The so-called "Parent Trigger" bill would allow parents in under-performing schools to opt for certain turnaround programs, which is really another way of saying the schools would become privatized as Charter schools for profit. Groups who have pushed for the law are Foundation for Excellence in Education, a non-profit led by former governor Jeb Bush, and Parent Revolution, funded by, among others the Walton Family Foundation, and Students First, a national organization founded by Michele Rhee (an education adviser to Gov. Rick Scott) that supports ?school choice,? charter schools and standardized testing. It's also quite possible there's involvement from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) which writes cookie cutter legislation for bills just like this one all across the country, although they deny involvement. Parent Trigger bills similar to this one have popped up in several states like California.

How ironic, or in other words, how Republican, that a bill called a "Parent Trigger" and is spoken of as a school "choice" issue is anything but. One group that opposes it? Parents. Unfortunately they haven't been allowed much of a say in the matter. In fact the Bush group has pushed back against parents who oppose:

The Foundation for Florida's Future sent out a fundraising letter seeking "pushback," saying: "Despite incredible successes over the past 10 years, those who seek to protect the status quo are as passionate as ever. This includes the League of Women Voters, AFL-CIO, Florida Education Association and local affiliates such as FundEducationNow and Save Our Schools."

If the lobbyists who have been hired to pass this bill are accusing Florida parents of defending our cherished neighborhood public schools, we say, "Guilty as charged." We love our children and the children of this state more than ourselves.

And it's not just the push back. Parents who have traveled to Tallahassee to voice their opinion have been all but shut out, or perhaps a better phrase would be "shut up or silenced."

We are frustrated that, for the third time in a week, a Florida parent testifying against the "Parent Empowerment Act" was cut off after less than 15 seconds. We travel to Tallahassee on our own dime. We arrange for baby sitters, help with homework over the phone and miss precious hours of our children's lives in order to tell our elected officials what we want. We're tired of being cut off, interrupted or not allowed to speak. We've heard one politician after another say that "parents really need to be empowered." The irony is that we are empowered. We're here. We've been here.

When politicians grant highly paid lobbyists unlimited time to testify and refuse to let us speak, it makes us furious. We are Florida taxpayers, parents and voters. If we don't have a right to speak during "parent empowerment" testimony, who does? We are tired of being told by wide-eyed politicians that they have never heard from us. Our position on the "parent- trigger" bill has been published by every major newspaper.

And it's not just the lobbyists. Parents who are in favor of the bill and who have been allowed to speak weren't actually from Florida, but from out of state.?

Parents denied a chance to be heard feel this is more a corporate empowerment bill than one of parental choice:

Not one legitimate parent group has asked for "parent-trigger" legislation. We do not support this corporate empowerment bill that uses parents' love to "pull the trigger" and pass all that they hold dear into the hands of a for-profit corporation eager to peel off a chunk of every child's per-pupil funding money for itself. We will not be silent while legislators use our money to fund three separate, unequal and unfair systems of education. We do not support laws that benefit 10 percent of the schools while the other 90 percent suffer.

This has gone too far. Florida public education is a process, not a product. This asset was created for and financed by the people of this state. It belongs to us. We will not apologize to anybody for defending our schools. We oppose the "Parent Empowerment Act" and its bad-faith intentions to privatize our public schools.

This bill comes after severe budget cuts to public schools already suffering, making them vulnerable to what amounts to a hostile takeover to privatize the schools. Parents have every right to be angry. From the party that so often accuses Democrats of wanting to "force regulations and laws down the throats" of everyday Americans, what better definition of that very same thing than what's happening with this bill?

The probably party line vote has been pushed back because the votes were too close to call.

Let's hope there aren't enough votes Friday. Privatizing schools would only benefit the profiteers pushing it, and education, and our children are the ones who will suffer the most.
