New Rochelle, NY, May 21, 2012Currently more than 10% of preschoolers in the U.S. are obese and effective strategies that target pregnancy, infancy, and toddlers are urgently needed to stop the progression of the childhood obesity epidemic, as proposed in an article in Childhood Obesity, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available free online ahead of print on the Childhood Obesity website at http://www.liebertpub.com/chi.

Evidence increasingly suggests that the risk for childhood obesity begins before and during pregnancy via maternal obesity and excessive gestational weight gain. It is likely that obese preschoolers will continue to be obese later in childhood and they may begin to exhibit adverse effects of obesity as early as 3 years of age.

Based on their review of the evidence from basic science, prevention, and systems research, the authors propose a systems approach to preventing childhood obesity that begins in pregnancy, continues through early life, and combines behavior change interventions with the implementation of environmental changes in communities.

Philip Nader, MD, University of California, San Diego (La Jolla, CA), and colleagues from University of Nebraska Medical Center (Omaha, NE), University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine (Philadelphia, PA), The Brookings Institution (Washington, DC), and Northwestern University (Chicago, IL), discuss their early life systems-oriented obesity prevention strategy in the article "Next Steps in Obesity Prevention: Altering Early Life Systems To Support Healthy Parents, Infants, and Toddlers."

"A great many forces conspire to produce epidemic obesity, in children and adults alike. Indeed, almost everything that makes modern living 'modern' is obesigenic. It will take an equal, or greater, opposing force to turn this tide and Dr. Nader and colleagues characterize this force artfully and convincingly. They show how we can and should apply a systems approach to obesity prevention and control that spans the lifespan and begins even before birth (so-called 'primordial prevention'). This is not just a very important article that we are delighted to publish - it is a clarion call, and blueprint, for effective action," says David L. Katz, MD, MPH, Editor-in-Chief of Childhood Obesity, and Director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center.

Like its predecessor, PlayStation 2 was also widely accepted throughout the world and upon the release of this gaming console, PlayStation 2 retail outlets continually ran out of PlayStation 2 gaming console stocks.

Today, after 6 long years of waiting for Sony to develop another gaming console that offers great quality entertainment, Sony will be releasing their latest addition to their gaming console lines, the PlayStation 3. Oil prices will rise, Iran says, if embargo comes

Oil prices will go up if European Union goes through with a total embargo on Iranian crude in July, Iran's economy minister says. IMF has warned oil prices could rise as much as 30 percent if Iran halts exports.

Iran's economy minister said oil prices will "certainly" rise if the European Union moves ahead with an embargo in July and that sanctions will backfire on those who impose them.

The European Union is preparing for a total embargo on the purchase of Iranian crude oil in July. The United States has also imposed sanctions targeting Iran's energy and banking sectors.

Iran's economy minister, Shamseddin Hosseini, was asked in an interview conducted Thursday and aired Sunday on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS" whether oil prices would rise substantially if the European Union moved forward with the oil embargo.

"Certainly, certainly. Even the IMF says that as a result of these sanctions, oil prices will perhaps reach and hover around $160 per barrel. And the decrease in financial and economic output in Europe will truly be felt," Hosseini said through a translator.

In January, the International Monetary Fund warned that global crude prices could rise as much as 30 percent if Iran halted oil exports as a result of U.S. and European Union sanctions.

The sanctions are aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions. The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is aimed at developing weapons, while Iran says it is for peaceful energy purposes.

The director general of the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency was to meet with Iran's chief nuclear negotiator in Tehran on Monday, two days before Iran meets with six world powers in Baghdad.

Hosseini warned that sanctions will create an "economic backlash" against the countries that impose them.

"We believe that those who impose the sanctions have exerted the maximum level of pressure they have been capable of," he said. "The economic strength of Iran is in such a way that can withstand these sanctions and will not be the only economy to suffer."

Asked what the price of oil will be in August, Hosseini said, "we must, at least, in order to have sustainable growth for the producers, maintain prices of $100 per barrel."

"But keep in mind the following: can the industrial powers get out of the current situation they're in with these prices? Therefore, the answer being obvious, the prices will go considerably higher than $100 per barrel," he said.

"If we see reforms, tangible reforms in this behavior, we will be in a much better place. If we don't, we will witness an increase in international oil markets."

Disrupting tree canopies on a Pacific atoll has ecological consequences

Web edition : Friday, May 18th, 2012

By following a pinball cascade of ecological consequences, researchers have traced the far-flung influences of preserving bird-friendly native forests versus replacing those forests with coconut palms on the Pacific atoll of Palmyra.

Red-footed boobies, black noddies and other seabirds that feast on fish nest in the islands? sturdy, many-branched native trees, says ecologist Douglas McCauley of the University of California, Berkeley. The birds tend to avoid the branch-poor, bendy coconut palms that were planted when people reached the far-flung atoll.

It turns out that the birds? real estate decisions affect where big fish feed off the coast. The nesting seabirds enrich forest soil with their droppings and carcasses, and water washing out of this rich forest carries about 26 times as much nitrogen as runoff from palm forests. Tiny plankton in the sea flourish on this nitrogen boost. In turn, plankton-feeding giant manta rays prefer waters near native forests instead of near the coconut groves, McCauley and his colleagues report online May 17 in Scientific Reports.

Let the Online War Begin: Benefits of a Professional Web Design

In the dog-eat-dog world of business, you need more than the usual search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to help you stay on top of your game. Competitive businesses aspire to be the alpha males that devour those at the bottom of the food chain, so they find other ways to get ahead of the competition. These days, a lot of companies focus on web design.

Web design refers to the planning and creation of websites. This broad term encompasses the user interface, site structure, information architecture, layout, colors, fonts, navigation, and imagery. These elements are combined in accordance with design principles to create cohesive and user-friendly websites. Budding entrepreneurs who plan to join the melee that is online marketing are advised to acquire the services of professional web designers rather than creating websites themselves.

The proverb "Don't judge a book by its cover" unfortunately doesn't always apply to website design.

No matter how excellent your products or services may be, customers and prospects are likely to veer away if they see that your website looks shoddier than an elementary school art project. Most websites are designed mainly to inform and also to entertain, so it's important to keep the pages appealing as visitors scroll down further while reading their content.

Having a professionally-designed website creates plenty of opportunities. For instance, it can attract and retain significantly more visitors, thereby generating more traffic to your site. According to a study, users leave web pages in about 10-20 seconds because they only read a quarter of the text, whereas well-designed websites can entice them to stay longer until they find what they're looking for.

If you're looking for talented web designers, Salt Lake City is the place to be. Salt Lake City is one of the major providers of professional and business services that many companies will approve of. Professional Salt Lake City web designers can be found almost anywhere. The best ways to track them down is by exploring the Internet or perusing the local listings.

Salt Lake City web designers can help pave the way toward a successful SEO campaign. They are backed with years of experience and vast knowledge of web design to improve your search engine visibility. In addition, they will ensure the code markup is clean and easy to read for search engine crawlers or "spiders".

In the battle of online marketing, entrepreneurs only have two choices: shape up or ship out. A professional Salt Lake City web design can help you gain the competitive advantage over the rest. To read more on web design, log on to Pingable.com for more details.

Cheaper gas not enough to boost summer driving

NEW YORK (AP) ? Cheaper gas won't be enough to get many more Americans on the road this summer. They're still too worried about their jobs and the economy.

Economists and tourism experts are expecting only a small uptick in summer travelers. Gas prices are lower, but still high enough to keep some Americans off the road. The job market is improving, but still shaky. And household debt remains high.

Those who do travel won't feel free to splurge. The bulk of road trippers, experts say, will take shorter trips and reduce food and entertainment spending to conserve cash.

"Travel is about security," said John Larson, Vice President for IHS Global Insight, the firm that analyzed the AAA study. "If you feel less secure about your future, you may be less willing to take this trip."

For Memorial Day weekend, auto club AAA estimates that 34.8 million Americans will take trips of at least 50 miles. That's a half-million more than Memorial Day 2011 but equal to the number who traveled two years ago. Roughly 30.7 million ? or 88 percent of those traveling ? will drive, up 1.2 percent from last year, AAA says. Memorial Day tends to be a good indicator of summer travel overall.

Gas prices may keep some low-wage earners home. But for the most part, Americans will buck up for gas, assuming they can afford to take a trip in the first place.

Douglas Frechtling, chair of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management at George Washington University, says broader economic concerns far outweigh gas prices for most Americans when considering summer vacations. Slowing job growth is likely rattling some families, and rent, car payments and other bills take priority over vacation.

Gas was averaging around $3.85 per gallon when AAA spoke with 315 would-be travelers from April 20 to 24. The survey showed that those making under $50,000 a year will make up about a quarter of all Memorial Day travelers, down from nearly a third a year ago. Higher gas prices eat up a larger share of lower-income families' household budgets.

AAA says the 66 cent increase in the average gas price from January through early April made many people skittish about taking long road trips. The average trip will be 642 miles this Memorial Day, compared with 792 miles. Half of those surveyed said they'll travel less than 400 miles.

Some travelers will drive this summer because they can't afford to fly.

Jennifer Padilla of Santa Fe, N.M., says her family is shelving a planned trip overseas this summer with family because her husband took a pay cut. Instead, the couple, their 3-year-old son and a friend will visit the sites in Bryce Canyon and Monument Valley, Utah, in their Honda CRV.

The average roundtrip domestic airfare this summer is expected to be up 9 percent to 10 percent from last year, according to Travelzoo. That's on top of a 5 to 7 percent increase between 2010 and 2011. AAA estimates that 5.5 percent fewer people will travel by plane this Memorial Day. The industry trade group Airlines for America is somewhat more optimistic about summer as a whole, predicting a slight 0.2 percent decrease in air travelers.

AAA and IHS found that Americans with incomes over $100,000 a year will make up a greater percentage of travelers than a year ago ? 36 percent compared with 30 percent. Middle-income Americans will account for 38 percent, down from 39 percent.

Families will carefully budget travel spending. Sixty-five percent of Memorial Day travelers surveyed by AAA say they'll cut back on entertainment costs during the weekend. Spending per person is expected to rise just $10, to $702, although falling gas prices could give travelers a few extra bucks to spend.

The U.S. Travel Association estimates Americans will spend about $725.4 billion on travel this year, up 3 percent from 2011, but less than half the increase between 2010 and 2011. Frechtling says about half of all trips are taken in the summer and the period accounts for about 40 percent of the year's spending.

Here's a look at how the modern summer vacation came to be and some facts about summer travel:

____

HISTORY

Summer has always been a popular time for Americans to skip town. While president, Thomas Jefferson was famous for spending most of the summer at Monticello. Working Americans didn't take summer breaks in earnest until the 19th century, however, when doctors started recommending relaxation as an important way to stay healthy. At about the same time, many schools split up their calendar from June to August, allowing families to travel together.

MOST POPULAR SUMMER DESTINATIONS

Travelers can't seem to get enough of Mickey Mouse. They also love Hawaii's beaches, Las Vegas' casinos, the Big Apple, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Grand Canyon. AAA's list of top destinations for 2011 was little changed from 2010 and 2009.

?No. 1: Orlando (Disney World)

?No. 2: Honolulu (Hawaii)

?No. 3: Anaheim (Disneyland)

?No. 4: Las Vegas

?No. 5: Kahului (airport for Maui, Hawaii)

?No. 6: New York

?No. 7: Lihue (airport for Kauai, Hawaii)

?No. 8: San Francisco

?No. 9: Phoenix

?No. 10: Seattle

PREPARATION

The typical traveler books vacation packages about 70 days in advance. Hotel reservations are booked later, usually within a month of the trip, according to AAA.

GETTING THERE

The car or truck is still Americans preferred way to travel, by a wide margin. Here's how we'll get to our vacation destination this Memorial Day weekend.

?Automobiles: 88 percent

?Airplane: 7 percent

?Miscellaneous (bus, train, cruise ship): 5 percent.

GAS PRICES

?The national average for gas is $3.727. At that price, a 400 mile trip in a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu would cost about $45.17 .

?The good news: gas has gotten cheaper. U.S. drivers have seen gas prices decline almost every day since the first week of April, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. The decline since April 6 is nearly 21 cents.

?Prices will vary widely depending on where you go. A gallon of regular unleaded costs $3.56 in Orlando, $4.39 in Los Angeles, $4.55 in Hawaii, $3.90 in Las Vegas, $4.09 in New York City, $4.41 in San Francisco, $3.78 in Phoenix and $4.23 in Seattle.

? Gasoline was an average $3.795 during Memorial Day weekend last year.

PST: Galaxy honored at the White House

On their way back to Los Angeles from Montreal, LA Galaxy stopped off for their well-earned White House visit. You know: that ceremonial honor given to those who win titles? The one people can?t decide is meaningful or merely obligatory? But hey, at least nobody didn?t use this as an opportunity for misguided?politicization?(though it would be funny to see Juninho dogmatically expressing strong views on the growth of government).

Per Washington Post?s Steven Goff, all the Galaxy luminaries were there, including a relatively ignored David Beckham. Former Galaxy contributors Clint Mathis and Chris Klein were also in attendance, presumably just in the neighborhood.

More interesting (for us) than a visit to the president, Goff got some time with former D.C. United, current Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena, whose answers on a myriad of topics ranged from pointed, to brow-furrowing, to more honest than he needs to be.

The honesty, as it concerned the visit itself:

?In a perfect world, we certainly wouldn?t be doing this,? said Arena, whose team played in Montreal on Saturday and will return to Los Angeles on Tuesday night. ?But it?s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the players and staff who haven?t been involved in this type of ceremony. It?s certainly a great honor.?

On what?s been troubling his team (which sits seventh in the West after lifting MLS Cup in November), well, that?s where brow-furrowing comes in:

?I can give you that answer at the end of the year,? he said. ?I have a lot of understanding why our issues to date have been what they are, but that?s not anything I will make public right now. I have a very good sense why.?

Oh, boy. That sounds horrible.

On his coaching future, having reached his 60th birthday:

?A year or two more and then I would love to have the challenge of impacting the technical direction of the league,? he said, declining to reveal when his contract expires. ?That?s something that keeps my head spinning every day. It?s been very difficult to have a dialogue in the league that impacts change.?

And that?s where the responses get particularly pointed. You should read Mr. Goff?s full interview to get the depth and flow, but one more piece on player?development:

?There is a model for how to do this stuff ? it?s how the rest of the world does it. The model is there for us. We just have to get that model efficiently running in our system. It takes a number of people having the time and the right voice and the right intelligence to articulate the message.?

Who has the right voice and intelligence? Check out the full interview.

Samsung unveils Galaxy S III accessories: wireless charger, S-pebble MP3, AllCast wireless dongle in tow

Image

While the star of today's Unpacked event is certainly Samsung's Galaxy S III, every hero can benefit from a few good sidekicks -- or in the case of this Android superphone, accessories. Up for offer will be a variety of goods including a flip cover, battery-charging stand, spare battery, car dock, "metallic docking stand" and HDMI adapter. Perhaps most interesting pieces, however, are the AllCast wireless dongle (which appears to be direct competition to HTC's Media Link HD video-mirroring device), a Wireless Charging Kit and an S-pebble MP3 player that plays nice with the scan and match feature in the Music Hub app. We're gathering all the details we can, so in the meantime grab a look at the gallery below.
