Digital Marketing ? Is It The New Buzz Word? - Chris and Susan ...

Digital Marketing ? Is It The New Buzz Word?

Digital Marketing - Is It The New Buzz Word

Definition of Digital Marketing

Here?s how we would describe it ?brand and product promotion using an array of digital tools to reach consumers including but not limited to search marketing, social media marketing, video marketing, email marketing, local internet marketing and various paid online advertising mediums ??

?? the pratice of promoting products and services using a variety of internet driven channels ? better known as internet or online marketing?

Digital Marketing has in all honesty been around for quite a long while (and the internet isn?t that old) but has never been well defined.? It has also been know by many other names such as ?internet marketing? or ?online marketing?.? But as we all know, fashions change and people are always looking for new ?buzz words?

Is ?Digital Marketing? the new buzz word?? Is ?internet marketing? no longer fashionable we wonder.? Does digital marketing have a better ring to it?? A new and better image maybe?? Who knows?

Let?s look in a little mor detail at the types of marketing which the words ?digital marketing? encompass just so we understand the concept a little better and can draw our own conclusions.

In essence, digital marketing? encompasses things like search engine optimisation (SEO), Pay Per Click (PPC), Video Streaming, Blogging, Podcasting, Banner Advertising, Email Broadcasting, Social Media, mobile technologies etc.

Sounding familiar?

In essense, Digital Marketing centres around the Internet and is a way of communicating through different mediums in a couple of ways ? what we call Push Marketing and Pull Marketing.? Push marketing is as the name suggests ?pushing a message? to someone such as in email, voice broadcasting, video broadcasting etc.? Pull marketing on the other hand is via ?pulled? content like bannder advertising and pay per click

In short, digital marketing is a combination of push and pull Internet ?technologies? to execute marketing campaigns.

Here?s what the ?oracle? Wikipedia has to say on Digital Marketing (it?s always useful to check it out)

?Two different forms of digital marketing exist:

In pull digital marketing, the consumer actively seeks the marketing content, often via web searches or opening an email, text message or web feed. Websites, blogs and streaming media (audio and video) are examples of pull digital marketing. In each of these, users have to navigate to the website to view the content. Only current web browser technology is required to maintain static content. Search engine optimization is one tactic used to increase activity.

In push digital marketing the marketer sends a message without the consent of the recipients, such as display advertising on websites and news blogs. Email, text messaging and web feeds can also be classed as push digital marketing when the recipient has not given permission to receive the marketing message. Push marketing is also known as spam. Push technologies can deliver content as it becomes available and can be better targeted to consumer demographics, although audiences are often smaller, and creation and distribution costs are higher ?

Have you started to build a list (database) in your business?

If you haven?t already started, you need to build a list (database) of customers or potential customers.? You will be doing this through the different methods described above. ? Then? using the various digital marketing methods above you will be able to market your products and services to them.

Is Digital Marketing the New Buzz Word?

We don?t know ? but for businesses, digital marketing sounds more appealling than internet marketing that?s for sure.

Putting on our hats as professional people (previously accountants and mangement consultants to small business) we can see that this would sit more comfortably.? Furthermore,? we do know that many many businesses are missing out right now by stubbornly thinking that ?THE INTERNET? is not for them.

In our opinion, this is a serious wake up call because if you don?t get with the digital age then you are just not going to thrive let alone survive as your competitors push forwards and realise the power of digital marketing.

We find it really surprising how many businesses still don?t have a website let alone taking advantage of many of the digital marketing opportunities ?. but it?s not too late.? It?s never too late.

The Solution

You will no doubt research a solution to your problem if you have realised you need to do something about your digital marketing plan ?.. we have looked at a lot of systems ? the good the bad and the ugly and only recommend a few depending on your needs.

Prometheus Bluray specs unveiled, arrives with seven hours of extras October 9th video

While Ridley Scott's latest flick is already available on just about every downloadable movie store you could name, Prometheus is still a few weeks away from making its debut on disc and now Fox has officially released all the details. The extras listed in an earlier leak appear to be accurate, with a Second Screen iPad app that promises access to character Peter Weyland's archives, while much of the 15 minutes or so of deleted and alternative scenes have already been posted on the internet (search around if you absolutely must know what else there is and can't wait / don't want to spend the cash). Arriving October 9th, there's a four disc set with both a Blu-ray 3D edition and bonus extras disc with featurettes for a total of seven hours of bonus materials, while the two disc set trims it to just one Blu-ray and DVD / digital copy. The two disc set is currently selling for $24.99 on Amazon, while the four disc edition bumps the price another $5. A trailer with a peek at some of those extras and the full list of details awaits after the break, but an explanation for why anyone would ever try to touch some weird space snake is something you'll have to find on your own.

Pornography's Effect on the Brain, Part 1 | The Occidental Observer ...

NEMO REPENTE FUIT TURPISSIMUS
?No one became extremely wicked all at once.? ? Juvenal, Satires

The aim of this essay is a controversial one: to provide evidence in support of the thesis that porn addiction, especially when accompanied by compulsive masturbation over a long period, alters brain chemistry and can eventually produce brain damage. This is not a conspiracy theory. It is an intellectually defensible thesis for which there is now a growing body of scientific evidence.

Perhaps the quickest way to tame and tranquilize an unruly nation is to turn its citizens into sex addicts: for just as children are easily taken in by predators who tempt them with candy, most people are only too pleased to live under governments that offer them the seductive pleasures of porn: that is to say, cheap and easy orgasms as substitutes for happiness.

Sex addiction, especially when fueled by internet pornography, has been likened to crack cocaine or heroin addiction, only much worse. It allows its victims no respite. It is a sickness of the soul that drives many to suicide, transforming its worst sufferers, like Ted Bundy and Gary Bishop, into serial killers. (See here and here).

The striking similarity between orgasm and the heroin rush was confirmed in 2003 when Dutch scientist Gert Holstege announced in a press release relating to his research that brain scans of orgasm resembled brain scans of shooting heroin. Laboratory rats know all about this, as a famous experiment in the 1950s by James Olds and Peter Milner conclusively demonstrated.

1.? UNDERSTANDING? BEHAVIOR? MODIFICATION

Rats go into a veritable frenzy pressing levers (in Skinner boxes) in order to give themselves powerful pleasurable sensations, even if it means depriving themselves of food and life. ?Some rats,? we are told, ?would self-stimulate as often as 2000 times per hour for 24 hours, to the exclusion of all other activities. They had to be unhooked from the apparatus to prevent death by self-starvation. Pressing that lever became their entire world.?

In a subsequent related experiment involving humans, a woman suffering from severe pain was allowed to stimulate the pleasure centers of her brain by turning an amplitude dial: so much so that she developed a chronic ulceration at her fingertip. She became so addicted to erotic self-stimulation that she had to beg her family to limit her access to the stimulator. (See also here)

OPERANT CONDITIONING CHAMBER OR ?SKINNER BOX?

American behaviorist psychologist BF Skinner (1904-1990) devised the operant conditioning chamber or Skinner box in the early 1930s. His object was to experiment with behavior modification in animals and then apply the same results to human beings. His major discovery was the concept of reinforcement: behavior that receives positive reinforcement (reward) tends to be repeated and strengthened, and behavior that receives negative reinforcement (punishment) tends to be extinguished. When placed in the Skinner box, the rat will learn to press a lever. This will trigger a reinforcing stimulus such as food or water, or a punishing stimulus such as an electric shock. The rat will rapidly learn to press the right lever and avoid the wrong one. In short, good habits can be acquired and bad habits destroyed in a systematic and scientific way under laboratory conditions.

Seven important points are worth noting here. These will allow the reader to trace the connection between operant conditioning and porn addiction.

(1) In the 1950s, psychologists James Olds and Peter Milner made a vitally important breakthrough in behavior modification research: they introduced innovations to the Skinner box so that the lever, instead of delivering food pellets when pressed, would now deliver direct brain stimulation through electrodes planted deep in the brain. Rats would now press the lever as many as 7000 times an hour to stimulate the pleasure centers of their brains. All other activities, including eating and drinking, were neglected. Every single moment was spent in pleasurable self-stimulation.

(2) How does this relate to porn addiction? Quite simply, the porn addict is behaving exactly like the rat in a Skinner box. His lever is masturbation, and his positive reinforcement or reward is the orgasm. His addiction is the result of self-imposed operant conditioning, i.e., he is conditioning himself without knowing it. The buildup to orgasm and the orgasm itself is accompanied by direct brain stimulation through the release of psychotropic chemicals into the bloodstream, especially dopamine, that produce precisely the same feelings of elation and euphoria in the porn addict which the rat experiences by the stimulation of the electrodes implanted in its brain.

(3) What triggers the release of the psychotropic chemicals into the bloodstream? The exciting erotic images. So it goes like this: Erotic mind pictures ?> trigger psychotropic chemicals ??> which stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain ?> which in turn produces obsessive-compulsive behavior (or addiction) in an attempt to relive the pleasurable sensations ??> which finally cause neuroplastic changes in brain structure as a result of constant chemical bombardment.

(4) Further brain research was to give rise to truly spectacular results in behavior modification, but this was at the cost of ?deeply unethical experiments?, to quote one politically correct academic researcher. This research, conducted by two daring and enterprising scientists called Drs. Moan and Heath, was abruptly halted because, among other things, it had come up with a possible cure for homosexuality. Moan and Heath had obtained permission to engage the services of a hooker to see if she could turn on a confirmed homosexual male in the laboratory. Initially, the sight of this sexy young woman not only left patient B-19 completely cold but actually disgusted him. He found the idea of having sex with an attractive female quite repulsive. However, on being wired up and having the pleasure centers of his brain stimulated with electrodes, while the hooker proceeded to perform her tricks on him, patient B-19 began to perk up and soon experienced an impressive ?erection. ?And then, despite the milieu and the encumbrance of the electrode wires [poor B-19 was attached to an EEG machine the whole time], he successfully ejaculated [in her vagina].?

(5)? Needless to say, such experimentation could not be allowed to continue, even with B-19?s full consent and cooperation and even though many homosexuals might want to become heterosexual and start families. It was political dynamite. So the experiments were abruptly halted, with Drs. Moan and Heath receiving a sharp rap on the knuckles and the stern disapproval of their politically correct peers. Since we are expected to believe that homosexuality is as ?normal? and ?healthy? a practice as heterosexuality, it follows that it is deeply offensive and ?homophobic? to suggest that homosexuals might want to undergo heterosexual conditioning to ?normalize? them. Even if they should wish to become heterosexuals, they should not be allowed to do so ?on ethical grounds.? After all, one does not allow people to self-mutilate or commit suicide. One needs to protect them from themselves. In the same way, homosexuals, for their own good, need the state to protect them from the threat of heterosexuality.

(6)? The blocking of research into sensitive areas of behavior modification for political reasons has had far-reaching consequences which cannot be discussed here in detail. Suffice to say that if it is considered ?ethically wrong? (= politically incorrect) to permit research that would yield an effective cure for homosexuality, then huge sacrifices in knowledge are deliberately being made in order to maintain the status quo on behalf of a corrupt elite?an elite that is not only against the idea of heterosexualizing gays but is actually committed to the homosexualization of America ? beginning with the homosexualization of children and their corruption by exposing them to child porn in the classroom.? ?

(7)? It is clear that successful behavior modification could, in theory, produce a Utopian society of model citizens. There need be no more sociopathic and criminal behavior in society, no more personality disorders, no more phobias and manias, no more neuroses, no more depression, no more crippling addictions to drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, eating, shopping, and self-harming. ?Such vast improvements in the mental health of society clearly cannot be permitted. If there were no more criminals, what would the police and legal profession do? There would no longer be a need for their services. That cannot be allowed. They need criminals. Fighting crime is their job. Similarly, if there are no more sick people, what would Big Pharma and the medical profession do? They need sick people. Fighting sickness is their job. A sad situation indeed when the greatest threat to the established order is a Utopian society of model citizens who have nothing wrong with them! Perfection, if it were ever achieved, would have to be banned.

(For further details on some of the points listed above, see here, here and here)

2.? PORN ADDICTION COMPARED TO HEROIN OR CRACK COCAINE ADDICTION

Columbia university neurologist Dr Norman Doidge, in his book The Brain That Changes Itself, describes how pornography causes rewiring of the neural circuits. He notes that in a study of men viewing internet pornography, the men looked ?uncannily? like rats pushing the levers in experimental Skinner boxes. ?Like the addicted rats,? Dr Doidge points out, ?the men were desperately seeking their next fix, clicking the mouse just as the rats pushed the lever.?

All addictions, Dr Dodge tells goes on to tell us, cause ?lifelong, neuroplastic changes in the brain.? This includes porn addiction:

Dopamine is also involved in plastic change. The same surge of dopamine that thrills us also consolidates neuronal connections. An important link with porn is that dopamine is also released in sexual excitement, increasing the sex drive in both sexes, facilitating orgasm, and activating the brain?s pleasure centers. Hence the addictive power of pornography.

The men at their computers looking at porn were uncannily like the rats in the cages of the NIH, pressing the bar to get a shot of dopamine or its equivalent. Though they didn?t know it, they had been seduced into pornographic training sessions that met all the conditions required for plastic change of brain maps. Since neurons that fire together wire together, these men got massive amounts of practice wiring these images into the pleasure centers of the brain, with the rapt attention necessary for plastic change.

They imagined these images when away from their computers, or while having sex with their girlfriends, reinforcing them. Each time they felt sexual excitement and had an orgasm when they masturbated, a ?spritz of dopamine,? the reward neurotransmitter, consolidated the connections made in the brain during the sessions. (See here)

It is in this way that pornography becomes a serious addiction, comparable to heroin or crack cocaine addiction, and begins its slow and deadly assault on the brain.? And as other research has shown, it facilitates callousness in sexual relationships?sex completely divorced from love and an interest in family and children.

3.? PORNOGRAPHY AND BRAIN DAMAGE: IS THERE A LINK?

Recent research has shown that pornographic images become permanently embedded in the brain, releasing large amounts of naturally occurring chemicals into the bloodstream: e.g., dopamine, epinephrine, oxytocin, serotonin, vasopressin, prolactin, and enkephalins or endogenous opiods, i.e., the brain?s own endorphins. People who view porn obsessively become literally intoxicated: drunk with an overdose of psychotropic chemicals. These mind-altering substances are now known as erototoxins, a relatively recent neologism meaning ?sex poisons?. This poison-bearing pornography, it has been shown in recent laboratory tests, ?actually alters brain chemistry? and will in time produce brain damage.

Just as alcohol in large quantities consumed over a long period will damage the liver and kidneys, and just as long-term tobacco addiction will adversely affect the? lungs and cardiovascular system, so highly charged erotic imagery accompanied by compulsive masturbation can eventually, it is argued, lead to chemico-biological brain damage. This will of course be strenuously denied by the Masturbation Lobby, but the claim has nevertheless been made by responsible medical researchers.

Dr. Gary Lynch, a neuroscientist at the University of California at Irvine, in discussing the effect that a single highly erotic image can have on the brain, points out ominously:? ?What we are saying here is that an event which lasts half a second [image imprint], within five to ten minutes has produced a structural change that is in some ways as profound as the structural changes one sees in [brain] damage.? (See here)

Dr Judith Reisman goes one step further. She refers to this brain damage as ?brain sabotage?, thereby implying that pornographers are in fact engaged in a species of ?sex terrorism?. She asks:

How does this ?brain sabotage? occur? Brain scientists tell us that ?in 3/10 of a second a visual image passes from the eye through the brain, and whether or not one wants to, the brain is structurally changed and memories are created; ?we literally grow new brain? with each visual experience.? Children and others who cannot read can instantly decode and experience images?. In fact, erotic (any highly arousing) images commonly subvert left hemisphere cognition.

Dr. Jeffrey Satinover, Psychiatrist and Professor at Princeton University, in his testimony to a Senate subcommittee on pornography toxicity, expresses himself even more forcefully:

Like cigarettes, that particular form of expression we call pornography is a delivery system that has a distinct and powerful effect upon the human brain and nervous system. Exactly like cigarettes, this effect is to cause a powerful addiction. Like any other addiction, the addiction is both to the delivery system itself?the pornography?and to the chemicals that the delivery system delivers.

It may seem surprising that I should speak of ?chemicals,? when one might be thinking instead of ?sex.? But, in fact, modern science allows us to understand that the underlying nature of an addiction to pornography is chemically nearly identical to a heroin addiction. (Emphasis added)

The pornography addict soon forgets about everything and everyone else in favor of an ever more elusive sexual jolt. He will eventually be able to find it only among other ?junkies? like himself, and he will place at risk his career, his friends, his family. He will indulge his habit anywhere and everywhere, at any time. No one, no matter how highly placed, is immune. (See here)

Porn addiction, we are told by practicing neurosurgeon Donald L. Hilton, Jr., MD, produces long-term brain damage in which

the frontal lobes atrophy or shrink. Addiction scientists have called this condition hypofrontality and have noted a similarity in the behavior of [porn] addicted persons to the behavior of patients with frontal brain damage? [which] can also result from a car wreck.

All addictions create, in addition to chemical changes in the brain, anatomical and pathological changes which result in various manifestations of cerebral dysfunction collectively labeled hypofrontal syndromes. In these syndromes, the underlying defect, reduced to its simplest description, is damage to the ?braking system? of the brain.

They are well known to clinical neuroscientists, especially neurologists and neurosurgeons, for they are also seen with tumors, strokes, and trauma. Indeed, anatomically, loss of these frontal control systems is most apparent following trauma, exemplified by progressive atrophy of the frontal lobes seen in serial MRI scans over time.

Not a peep of any of this in the mainstream media. You don?t need three guesses to know why. The world porn industry generates $97 billion a year in revenues. If porn damages your brain, this is the last thing the wealthy elitists who run the world and control the mass media would wish to tell you. ?The publishing industry is now heavily involved in pornography,? Dr E. Michaels Jones points out, ?and it is not in their interests to explain to the public that they are in the business of enslaving people.? (p.560)

Is one a Victorian prude for suggesting there is something seriously amiss here? The simple fact is that one awkward question remains unanswered by all these self-appointed ?sex experts??many of them egregious frauds and sexual perverts like Kinsey and Reich?and it is this: how can all this compulsive masturbation and porn consumption be good for you if they end up damaging your brain?

Masturbation doesn?t necessarily make you blind. Let?s hope it doesn?t. Maybe it?s not the eyes, but the brain, that ardent aficionados of the solitary vice need to worry about.

This day in baseball history

On Saturday, September 29, 1962, the Los Angeles Dodgers squandered an opportunity to clinch the National League pennant when they lost 2-0 to the St. Louis Cardinals. 25-game winner Don Drysdale pitched brilliantly for the Dodgers, limiting St. Louis to 5 hits and no earned runs. But the Cards scored 2 in the second inning thanks to an error by lumbering Frank Howard on a Dal Maxvill fly ball.

Ernie Broglio made the runs stand up by pitching a two hit shut-out. Broglio also contributed an RBI single. It was perhaps his finest single moment as a Cardinal, unless you count being traded a few years later for future Hall of Famer Lou Brock.

Even with the loss, the Dodgers saw their ?magic number? drop to 1, with 1 game remaining in the regular season, as the Giants split a doubleheader with Houston. The Giants took the opener, 11-5. Despite a rocky outing, Jack Sanford won his 24th game of the year with the help of strong relief pitching by Stu Miller. But in the nightcap, the Colt 45s chased Juan Marichal in the 5th inning on the way to a 4-2 victory.

The Dodgers, losers now of 3 straight, and 9 of their last 12, could still clinch the pennant by winning on Sunday. And, regardless of the outcome of the Dodgers game, the Giants would need to win to preserve any hope of forcing a playoff series.

Learning to live on Mars: Fatigue management program for controlling space-age jetlag

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Since the beginning of August, NASA's Mars rover, Curiosity, has been roaming all over the distant planet learning as much as it can about the Martian terrain. The mission control team back on Earth has also learned what it may be like on Mars by trying to live and work on a Martian day, which is about 40 minutes longer than an Earth day. This 'day' length causes havoc with the internal 24-hour body clock but researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) have developed and tested a fatigue management program which is successful at controlling this space-age jetlag.

The results of the study will be published electronically on September 28, 2012 and will be published in the October print issue of SLEEP.

Mission controllers investigating the Martian landscape are required to communicate with the rover on Martian time. This unusual schedule poses a great challenge as our internal body clock has evolved to expect a 24-hour light-dark, not a 24.65 h 'day', making it difficult to sleep, wake and work. "Our study, which was conducted during the Phoenix Mars Lander mission, investigated the effectiveness of a pilot program to educate the mission personnel on how to reset their body clocks more quickly and how to improve their sleep, alertness and performance," explained Steven W. Lockley, PhD, neuroscientist at BWH, and senior investigator on this study.

The research team studied 19 scientific and technical personnel supporting the Phoenix Lander mission for more than 11 weeks. The participants were assessed using a sleep/work diary, continuous wrist actigraphy, and regular performance tests. A subset of the study participants were also given portable blue-light light boxes to place at their workstations to help reset their internal body clocks and improve their performance. The researchers found that most of the participants were able to synchronize to a Martian day schedule.

"While adapting the human sleep-wake and performance cycle to a 24.65 hour day is a substantial challenge, our study has provided the foundation to develop comprehensive fatigue management programs for future missions, which may eventually include manned missions to Mars," explained Laura Barger, PhD, an associate physiologist at BWH and principal investigator of the study. "Such a program could decrease the risk of fatigue-related mistakes during these high profile and expensive missions."

Researchers suggest that these findings may also prove helpful to other groups that work on unusual 'day-lengths' such as submariners who have traditionally lived on an 18-hour day.

Key to Financial Control Budgeting Finances

When you?re learning about something new, it?s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of relevant information available. This informative article should help you focus on the central points.

For the average household, the money coming in never seems to match the money going out. Which is why every pay day, we face a lot of stress in deciding what to spend the money on, how much and when.

We all want to live well and comfortably without busting our budget. We want to have the right amount of money when we need to pay the rent, utilities and other necessary expenses but still have some money left to buy those things we want. Oh, yes we want to have ?financial control? as economists have put it.

Budgeting finances is the key to have that financial control we have all been dreaming of. Budgeting finances isn?t as complex as Differential Calculus or as abstract as Symbolic Logic. Budgeting finances is equal to Common Sense.

Below are five simple keys to financial control:

1. CUT THE CREDIT CARDS

It is best if you don?t use credit cards, or even own one. If you think you?re responsible enough to use it in emergency situation, then leave one for those times. Buying a Gucci dress for a hot date isn?t an emergency situation. Paying for school tuition fee or electric bills is a right example of emergency situation.

Only fools keep more than one credit card. If you want to go down the pool of debt then own ten.

Keeping ourselves away from temptation is the first step to effective finance budgeting and financial control.

2. ELIMINATE WASTE

You can see that there?s practical value in learning more about Budgeting. Can you think of ways to apply what?s been covered so far?

A new pair of shoes is considered a waste if you still own four workable sets of pumps. Expensive toys that you just display on the dusty corner, the set of paperbacks lined on the bookshelf but left untouched, dining out when you can cook at home, are all waste of money. Whenever you feel the impulse to shop and dine for your pleasure, why not try this little experiment: estimate the amount you?ll possibly pay for giving in to your heart?s desire, then set the money aside, put it in an envelop, seal it, and open it after six months. When you see how much you?ve saved, you will, undoubtedly, never buy impulsively again.

3. START TO COUNT IT ALL DOWN

Many people don?t even know where their money is being spent. To them, budgeting finances is simply laying out the money on the table, apportioning them in envelops, and labling each envelop with Bills, Rent, Amortization, Transportation, Food.

But budgeting finances require a pen and a notebook. Input the incoming money and the outgoing money, find the difference, and voila, your personal budget right in front of your eyes. Write in a separate sheet all your debts, recurring expenses and future expenses (such as yearly fee for life insurance or health card). Writing everything down will help you see when you spend the most and for what purpose, and how much you must raise for future expenditures.

4. DECREASE DEBTS ONE AT A TIME

The amount of debt left unpaid increases overtime due to interest rates. To keep yourself and family from sleepless nights due to debts, start budgeting your finances with special interest on decreasing debts.

Write down in your budget pad or software every debts you have, even the small ones. Number them according to importance. Between a house mortgage and a car mortgage, label the house mortgage as 1.

Then study your budget pad. Could you cut down expenses on utility bills or transportation? If yes, how much would it raise to add up to fund the mortgage? Study all possibilities of cutting down your expenses.

Take advantage also of the amnesty program that banks and credit card companies offer. Most especially the credit card companies, they offer payment of principal amount less the padded interest. Having been able to settle one debt is already a big leap to financial control.

Now you can be a confident expert on Budgeting. OK, maybe not an expert. But you should have something to bring to the table next time you join a discussion on Budgeting.

Recreation and sports: Manual For Bicycle Shoppers

Purchasing a ?bicycle can ?look like an ?effortless enough ?job without any ?drawbacks or ?long term glitches. As ?straightforward a ?method as it may seem to be, buying a ?bicycle is more involving than ?just simply ?heading to hardware or ?bicycle ?stores and ?picking the one you want, ?based on color, ?measurements or design. This ?write-up will ?seek to ?provide a novice ?biker's guide to prospective bike ?purchasers and point out ?important ?factors to ?think of before ?getting one.

Bicycles ?are available in different ?forms, ?styles and ?dimensions and are ?geared up for a variety of ?operations. There are ?various ?kinds of ?bicycle to ?pick from and some of the ?elements to ?think about before ?arriving at a final ?selection on which one to ?purchase include where you will ?use your ?bike, what you will ?utilize the ?bike for, how ?frequent you will ride it and whether you have any ?physical health ?problems, amongst others. These are but a ?handful of pointers to ?take into account. These and ?a lot more ?factors to consider will guide you into what ?kind of ?bicycle to buy. It is ?essential to answer all these ?queries before ?getting your bicycle, as these will ?enlighten your ?judgment on which ?sort of bicycle to ?buy .

?Various ?kinds of ?bikes serve different ?features and ?have different ?functions. The cargo bicycles come ?geared up with a cargo carrier and are more balanced to ?allow you to ?hold cargo as you cycle. The ?mtb or BMX bikes as they are popularly known are more suitable for mountaineering and hiking - they also come in handy for uneven off ?route ?surfaces or for bad ?routes. Their ?style and make can take harsh and ?jagged terrain. ?Convenience ?bikes are ?excellent for your everyday and ?normal cycling either for ?health and fitness or for going to work purposes. They come handy for that ?swift cycling to the ?stores ?to buy ?breadstuff or for an early ?daytime ?physical fitness ?biking exercise. These are just a few ?samples of ?kinds of bicycles to consider.

When ?getting a ?bike, it is ?crucial to take the ?dealers advice with some caution. Every seller ?desires to clear their stock and when it ?pertains to ?bikes, you are ?likely to be ?informed that their bikes on display or stock are the ?greatest. Do your own research if possible, shop around and find out more, before ?purchasing, to avoid future disappointment and ?owning a ?bike that does not ?serve for your ?demands and ?passions . ?One more ?aspect to consider is the ?rate of the ?bicycle you ?desire to ?get. If it costs an arm and a leg, it does not ?always ?imply that it is the best on the ?industry. If the ?rate almost ?match-up that of a scooter, chances are you are ?much better off with a ?motorcycle than a bicycle.

Having highlighted a ?couple of ?points to ?think about when buying a bike, the ?decision is now yours. To be ?updated beforehand ?assists you to get ahead.

Einstein's brain is now interactive iPad app

The brain that revolutionized physics now can be downloaded as an app for $9.99. But it won't help you win at Angry Birds.

While Albert Einstein's genius isn't included, an exclusive iPad application launched Tuesday promises to make detailed images of his brain more accessible to scientists than ever before. Teachers, students and anyone who's curious also can get a look.

A medical museum under development in Chicago obtained funding to scan and digitize nearly 350 fragile and priceless slides made from slices of Einstein's brain after his death in 1955. The application will allow researchers and novices to peer into the eccentric Nobel winner's brain as if they were looking through a microscope.

"I can't wait to find out what they'll discover," said Steve Landers, a consultant for the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago who designed the app. "I'd like to think Einstein would have been excited."

After Einstein died, a pathologist named Thomas Harvey performed an autopsy, removing the great man's brain in hopes that future researchers could discover the secrets behind his genius.

Harvey gave samples to researchers and collaborated on a 1999 study published in the Lancet. That study showed a region of Einstein's brain ? the parietal lobe ? was 15 percent wider than normal. The parietal lobe is important to the understanding of math, language and spatial relationships.

The new iPad app may allow researchers to dig even deeper by looking for brain regions where the neurons are more densely connected than normal, said Dr. Phillip Epstein, a Chicago-area neuroscientist and consultant for the museum.

But because the tissue was preserved before modern imaging technology, it may be difficult for scientists to figure out exactly where in Einstein's brain each slide originated. Although the new app organizes the slides into general brain regions, it doesn't map them with precision to an anatomical model.

"They didn't have MRI. We don't have a three-dimensional model of the brain of Einstein, so we don't know where the samples were taken from," said researcher Jacopo Annese of the Brain Observatory at the University of California, San Diego. What's more, the 1-inch-by-3-inch Einstein slides on the app represent only a fraction of the entire brain, Annese said.

Annese has preserved and digitized another famous brain, that of Henry Molaison, who died in 2008 after living for decades with profound amnesia. Known as "H.M." in scientific studies, Molaison participated during his life in research that revealed new insights on learning and memory.

A searchable website with images of more than 2,400 slides of Molaison's entire brain will be available to the public in December, Annese said.

"There will be another Einstein and we'll do it like H.M.," Annese predicted. For now, he said, it's exciting that the Einstein brain tissue has been preserved digitally before the slides deteriorate or become damaged. The app will spark interest in the field of brain research, just because it's Einstein, he said.

"It's a beautiful collection to have opened up to the public," Annese said.

Some may question whether Einstein would have wanted images of his remains sold to non-scientists for $9.99.

"There's been a lot of debate over what Einstein's intentions were," museum board member Jim Paglia said. "We know he didn't want a circus made of his remains. But he understood the value to research and science to study his brain, and we think we've addressed that in a respectful manner."

Paglia said the app could "inspire a whole new generation of neuroscientists."

Proceeds from sales will go to the U.S. Department of Defense's National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Md., and to the Chicago satellite museum, which is set to open in 2015 with interactive exhibits and the museum's digital collections.

Romney: ?My heart aches? for struggling Americans

(Alex Wong/Getty Images)WESTERVILLE, Ohio?Mitt Romney kicked off a day of campaigning in this battleground state by insisting his "heart aches" for struggling Americans and that he is better prepared than President Barack Obama to help those who are "hurting" under the tough economy.

Speaking at a rally located in a swing district just outside Columbus, Romney kept repeating his empathy for people out of work and trying to pay their bills?insisting that he will do his "very best to help" those in need "when I am president."

"I've been across this country, and my heart aches for the people I've seen," Romney told a crowd of several hundred people here. "There are so many in our country that are hurting right now. I want to help them."

Relating the story of an unemployed woman he met at a rally on Tuesday, Romney insisted over and over that he has "what it takes to get the economy going again."

"I care about the people in America," he said. "And the difference between me and President Obama is I know what to do, and I will do what it takes to get this economy going."

Romney's remarks came as yet another public poll found him losing significant ground to Obama in Ohio, which has been considered a must-win state for his campaign. A New York Times/CBS News/Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday found Obama leading Romney by 10 points, 53 percent to 43 percent. It came on the heels of a Washington Post poll released Tuesday that found Obama leading Romney by 8 points in Ohio.

Top Romney aides have downplayed the public polling?suggesting their internal numbers remain close. But Romney's message on the stump Wednesday seemed to be informed by findings in the latest round of surveys, including stats from the NYT/CBS/Quinnipiac poll showing that he still holds an advantage over Obama when it comes to who would be best equipped to handle the growing federal deficit.

Campaigning in a high school gym here, Romney spoke against the backdrop of a constantly updating national debt clock?a prop that hasn't been used at his rallies for a while. He spoke at length about why the growing deficit is a major crisis for the country?one, he claimed, that Obama is ignoring.

Highlighting the nation's $16 trillion in debt, Romney said of Obama, "If he were re-elected, I can assure you, it would be almost $20 trillion debt."

Looking to offer context, Romney added, "What is a trillion? It's a thousand billions."

Romney also called for efforts to "reform our tax system"?but at the same time, he seemed to downplay the idea of instituting major tax relief should he be elected president.

"Small businesses most typically pay taxes at the individual tax rate. And so our individual income taxes are the ones I want to reform. Make them simpler. I want to bring the rates down," Romney said.

But, he added, "Don't be expecting a huge cut in taxes because I'm also going to lower deductions and exemptions. But by bringing rates down we will be able to let small businesses keep more of their money so they can hire more people."

Amid criticism from members of his own party that he hasn't had any "fire in the belly" on the trail, Romney seemed more passionate on the stump than he's been in weeks.

Ahead of his arrival onstage, aides played for the crowd a powerful biographical video of Romney that first aired during the Republican National Convention. The video featured interviews with Romney's wife, Ann, and their five sons. Those in the gym seemed captivated by the clip. The video has been the subject of questions among Republicans lately about why the Romney campaign isn't doing more to broadcast it throughout swing states, where polls show voters are still skeptical about Romney personally.

Romney's move to emphasize his compassion with voters here came as his campaign continues to do damage control over the candidate's suggestion in a secretly taped video at a May fundraiser that Obama supporters?which he calculated to be "47 percent" of the country?see themselves as victims and are too dependent on the government.

Ahead of his rally, the Romney campaign released an ad featuring the candidate speaking directly to the camera about "compassion" and his desire to help the middle class.

Joining Romney onstage was golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who is from the area. He offered up a full-throated endorsement of the GOP candidate, arguing that people "want us to be like America to be like we were."

Romney would "ignite a real recovery" if elected, Nicklaus said.

The Santa Barbara Zoo : Luxury Real Estate Blog

Courtesy of Staci Caplan and Michael Humphrey Sterling Properties & Estates - Santa Barbara Luxury Homes and Real Estate

The Santa Barbara lifestyle is one of refined beachside elegance. Visions of grand luxury homes and real estate properties, fine local wines, pristine beaches and resorts ideal for your next vacation, and incredible natural beauty come to mind, attracting countless visitors and luxury home seekers each year. Imagine a 30 acre property within walking distance to the glimmering Pacific Ocean, filled with lush botanical gardens, overlooking the Andree Clark Bird Refuge and the Santa Ynez Mountains?does this sound like a dream property? Welcome to the Santa Barbara Zoo, hailed as one of the most beautiful zoos in the world and the dream home of more than 400 animals from 160 species!

The coastal city of Santa Barbara has a rich and interesting history, and the Santa Barbara Zoo is no exception. The land that the Santa Barbara Zoo is located on was purchased in the late 1800s by a tea and coffee merchant who rode on horseback from Pasadena to Santa Barbara ? and who was so charmed by Santa Barbara?s beauty that he decided to stay! When he died, his widow graciously allowed a self-policed community of victims of the Great Depression to live on the property ? so long as they abided by her rules on order and neatness. Once she was no longer able to maintain the estate, she donated it to the Santa Barbara Foundation. When the time came for the Santa Barbara Foundation to decide what to do with the land, they ultimately decided to give back to the community by using the land as the site for the Santa Barbara Zoo, which opened its doors in August 1963.

(AP) ? A factory in China owned by the manufacturer of Apple's iPhones resumed production Tuesday after a brawl by workers highlighted tensions that labor groups say were worsened by the pressure of a new iPhone launch.

Foxconn Technology Group and police said the cause of the unrest Sunday night was under investigation, but labor activists said the rollout of the iPhone 5 has led to longer working hours and more pressure on workers. Foxconn and police said as many as 2,000 employees were involved in the brawl and 40 people were reported injured.

The iPhone 5 debuted last week in the United States and eight other countries and Apple has a three- to four-week backlog of online orders. Foxconn has declined to say whether its one-day suspension of production Monday in Taiyuan might affect supplies. It did not respond to a request for comment on the labor groups' claims.

News reports and witnesses said the violence Sunday night in Taiyuan in northern China stemmed from a confrontation between a factory worker and a guard that escalated. One employee reached by telephone said the violence was fueled by workers' anger about mistreatment by Foxconn security guards and managers.

"Foxconn, some supervisors, and security guards never respect us," said the employee, who asked not to be identified by name. "We all have this anger toward them and they (the workers) wanted to destroy things to release this anger."

Production at the Taiyuan factory resumed on Tuesday, Foxconn said in a written statement. It did not respond to a request for information on the status of its investigation or whether policies at the factory might be changed.

Foxconn, owned by Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., is the world's biggest assembler of consumer electronics, with about 1.2 million workers in factories in Taiyuan, the southern city of Shenzhen, in Chengdu in the west and in Zhengzhou in central China. It makes iPhones and iPads for Apple and also assembles products for Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Labor activists say the need to ramp up iPhone 5 production has increased pressure on Foxconn employees.

"Because of the launch of the iPhone 5, the workload of workers suddenly surges," said a Hong Kong group, Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour, in a report this month. It said some employees interviewed at the Zhengzhou factory had not had a day off in the previous 30 days.

Foxconn has declined to say which products are made in each factory but another group, China Labor Watch, said the Taiyuan facility, which employs 79,000 people, is making the iPhone 5.

The group, based in New York City, complained that employees suffer "verbal and physical abuse" by guards.

"These workers must be treated with respect," it said in a statement. "And both Apple and Foxconn, with billions of dollars in profits every year, have both a legal and ethical obligation to uphold the rights of these workers."

Labor tensions in China have been aggravated by a slowing economy that is squeezing employers and a communist system that prohibits independent labor unions.

Many factories and other businesses have unions but they must be part of the state-sanctioned All-China Federation of Trade Unions. Workers complain leaders of local branches often are allied with management and fail to stand up for the workforce.

That means grievances over pay or other issues spiral into strikes and protests. In some cases, ACFTU representatives have scuffled with striking workers, trying to force them to return to work.

"They have no other way of voicing their grievances," said Geoffrey Crothall, communications director for China Labour Bulletin, a Hong Kong organization that promotes employee rights in China. "There are no formal channels of communication or ways of resolving grievances through peaceful negotiation."

Foxconn raised minimum pay and promised in March to limit hours after an auditor hired by Apple found Foxconn employees were regularly required to work more than 60 hours a week.

That review followed a rash of suicides at Foxconn facilities ? about a dozen since 2010 ? and an explosion at the iPad-making plant in Chengdu in May 2011 that killed four employees.

Foxconn's facilities are exceptionally large by the standards of a Chinese electronics industry in which most manufacturers employ hundreds or thousands of workers. Its flagship mainland factory in Shenzhen, near Hong Kong, has 250,000 workers. The Chengdu site has 100,000 and the company has said the Zhengzhou factory might eventually employ 300,000.

Foxconn also has faced criticism in the past over the conduct of its security guards.

In 2010, Foxconn's parent, Hon Hai, pledged its guards would obey the law and refrain from using threats or harassment after a videotape showing several beating workers was circulated on the Internet.

Foxconn employees have complained about what some critics call "military-style management."

"Workers are expected to obey their manager at all times, not to question but simply do what they are told," said Crothall. "That atmosphere is not conducive to a happy or contented workforce. It's a very dehumanizing way of treating workers."

Old mansion gives glimpse into the oil boom of Whittier

Nestled among apartment buildings above Beverly Boulevard rests a two-story seven- room mansion that goes unnoticed. Outside of the Comstock Apartments on the 5800 block of Comstock Avenue are columns from a gazebo originally in front of the mansion. What lies behind is the home originally built by oilman William Loftus in 1911.

"We do get people that come up, usually older folks who know about the house," said apartment manager, Veronica Wilkerson. "I can usually tell that they are here to see the house."

The house is adorned with three bathrooms, hardwood floors, hand-carved wood and sliding pocket doors that separate rooms.

"One of the most spectacular things about this house is the stained glass panel," said Wilkerson. "It has been reported that it is an unsigned original Dale Tiffany."

It also has a stained glass dome, that is in the ceiling above the staircase, depicting scenes from the area.

Although the house has been divided into apartments, much of the elegant decor has been preserved. They found gold leaf details that had been painted over as well as some other wood features.

The house is divided into seven rental units that share the bathrooms and a kitchen.

Wilkerson says that the current owners, who built that 24-unit apartments around the house, fought to keep the house after they were told to demolish it by the city.

Lukashenko sneers at opposition boycott as Belarus votes

MINSK (Reuters) - Belarus's President Alexander Lukashenko called opposition leaders "cowards" after they urged people to go mushrooming rather than vote in an election set to reinforce the hardline leader's grip on the ex-Soviet country.

"They are cowards who have nothing to say to the people," Lukashenko - a populist who has run the country of 9.5 million with an iron fist since 1994 - told journalists after voting at a Minsk polling station where an orchestra turned out to play.

The two main opposition parties see the election as a sham exercise to produce a 110-seat chamber which largely rubber-stamps Lukashenko's directives.

Opposition parties, the United Civic Party and the Belarussian People's Front, said anyone voting would be casting a ballot for his leadership as a whole and would be validating the detention of political prisoners and election fraud.

But students, armed service staff and police voting had already produced a 26 percent turnout, official figures showed, and there was no question of the boycott threatening the overall turnout threshold and the validity of Sunday's ballot.

The outcome will enable Lukashenko to present the election as a genuine democratic process. Western monitoring agencies have not judged an election in Belarus free and fair since 1995.

Defending his 18-year-long rule and intolerance of dissent, the former Soviet state farm boss, once described by the U.S. administration of George W. Bush as Europe's last dictator, said on Sunday: "We don't need revolutions and shake-ups."

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has fielded 330 observers for the election and is expected to give its verdict on the election on Monday.

"If this time round there is doubt cast on the choice of the Belarussian people then I don't know what standards will be good enough in future elections," Lukashenko, who was accompanied by his 7-year-old son Kolya, said.

Asked about possible Western recognition for the vote, he said he hoped "for the best". "We don't hold elections for the West. The main architect is the Belarussian people," he said.

Lukashenko's relations with the United States and the European Union, which were never good, nose-dived when he cracked down on street protests against his re-election in December 2010.

Scores of his opponents - including several who stood against him - were arrested. Many now either lie low after periods in jail or have fled the country.

ARRESTS, DETENTIONS

Human rights bodies say the run-up to Sunday's poll - inconsequential though it is - has been marked by arrests and detention of opposition activists.

State-run television and radio have made no mention of the boycott call. Opposition groups have been prevented from holding street protests or giving out leaflets to support their action.

"These are all banned," said Anatoly Lebedko, head of the United Civic Party, gesturing on Saturday to a pile of leaflets on his desk which called on people to take their families to the park, go fishing or stroll in the woods rather than vote.

Activists who had tried to distribute them were stopped from doing so by police and the leaflets were seized, he said.

His party posted a video on YouTube featuring activists gathering mushrooms, playing chess and reading books in a park - all as alternatives to going to polling stations to vote.

Anatoly, a 50-year-old computer programmer who cast his vote at a central polling station in a high school building, said: "I am hoping for new deputies in parliament who suit me better in their work." Referring to the opposition boycott, he said: "I don't condemn them. In their situation, they considered this the right thing to do."

Yuri, a teacher of about the same age, was more severe in his comments about the opposition. "The country does not need these people. I consider it normal for a person to take part in the public life of our country," he said.

While shrugging off the boycott threat, authorities have been unsettled by a genuine lack of interest in one of the most low-key ballots since Belarus became independent 20 years ago.

Earlier this week Belarussian state television rejigged its programs to show footage of people enthusiastically casting their ballots in early voting which started last Tuesday.

Opposition activists say many students in higher-education were told to go and vote, sometimes under threat of losing their subsidized accommodation.

Many senior opposition figures have dropped out of sight following the 2010 police crackdown, including Andrei Sannikov, a former deputy foreign minister, and Vladimir Neklyayev who heads the Tell the Truth movement. Both of them ran against Lukashenko in 2010 and subsequently spent time in jail.

Earlier this week, state security police broke up a small demonstration urging people to cook borshch - beetroot soup - instead of voting. Several activists were arrested as well as news photographers covering the event. Some of the journalists were released after about two hours.

Analysts say that the election is not likely to promote any strong personality among deputies capable of competing with Lukashenko. Previous parliaments have initiated very little legislation independent of the presidency.

Despite U.S. and EU sanctions, which prevent Lukashenko and his inner circle travelling to anywhere in the West, the small country has weathered a currency crisis which drained it of dollars and caused two big devaluations.

This was largely thanks to Russia, which provided $4.5 billion in loans and investments in exchange for access to industrial assets such as pipelines pumping Russian gas to Europe. With the deterioration in relations with the West, Belarus has moved closer to Russia with which it has an open border and shares a common air defense network.
