Obama: Romney has no 'single new idea'

US President Barack Obama accused Republican foe Mitt Romney of failing to offer "a single new idea" and of being a relic of the last century as he revved up a pre-convention tour.

Rattling through battleground states en route to the Democratic National Convention this week in Charlotte, North Carolina, Obama also rebuked Romney for ignoring the Afghan war during his own nominating speech.

"It was something to behold," Obama told a 13,000-strong crowd in Colorado, as he picked apart Romney's keynote address in Florida on Thursday night that marked the climax of a three-day Republican convention.

"Despite all the challenges we face in this new century, what they offered over those three days was an agenda that was better suited for the last century," Obama said.

"It was a rerun... we have seen it before -- you might as well have watched it on a black and white tv with some rabbit ears."

Democrats say that Romney, who used his convention to try to tell his personal story and improve his likeability ratings, may have given Obama an opening by offering only sketchy policy stands.

They are also framing Obama as a candidate of the future, with his slogan "Forward," and to position the older Romney -- he is aged 65 while Obama is 51 -- as a contender from a bygone era.

Obama said that Romney, with whom he is neck and neck in the polls ahead of the November election, had refused to reveal the "secret sauce" that would help him create jobs: "he did not offer a single new idea."

"It was retreads of the same old policies we have been hearing for decades, the same politics that have been sticking it to the middle class for years," the president added.

He also ripped Romney for having "nothing to say" in his speech in Florida about the Afghan war, which the president has promised to end "responsibly" in the same way that he brought troops home from Iraq.

"We are bringing our troops home from Afghanistan. And I set a timetable -- we will have them out of there by 2014. Governor Romney doesn't have a timetable. I think he is wrong."

Romney has criticized setting a withdrawal date for US forces, saying doing so would aid US enemies.

But he has also suggested that the "right timetable" for a withdrawal is by the end of 2014 -- a date already set by NATO.

The Romney campaign meanwhile pounced on a slip by Obama supporter and Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, who was asked whether Americans were better off now than four years ago.

"No, but that's not the question of this election," O'Malley told CBS show "Face the Nation," blaming former Republican president George W. Bush for lingering agony in the US economy.

"We are not as well off as we were before George Bush brought us the Bush job losses, the Bush recession, the Bush deficits, the series of desert wars charged for the first time to... a national credit card."

Romney was quick to exploit the comment, which offered support for the central conceit of his campaign that Obama, despite good intentions and soaring speeches, has done little to improve the economic lot of the middle class.

"This president can ask us to be patient. This president can tell us it was someone else's fault. This president can tell us that the next four years he'll get it right," the former Massachusetts governor said in a statement.

"But this president cannot tell us that YOU are better off today than when he took office. America has been patient.

"Americans have supported this president in good faith. But today, the time has come to turn the page."

One of Obama's top political advisors, David Plouffe, meanwhile charged that Romney's campaign was built on "a tripod of lies" accusing him of misrepresenting the president's positions on welfare reform, health care for the elderly and small businesses.

Obama is on a four-day "Road to Charlotte" tour taking in territory that will decide November's election, in which his prospects are clouded by a painfully slow economic recovery and 8.3 percent unemployment.

He started in Iowa, the state that nurtured his unlikely 2008 presidential run and where he is now locked in a tight race with Romney.

After Colorado, the president heads to Ohio to celebrate the Labor Day holiday with working Americans on Monday.

Should Obama win Ohio, a perennial bellwether state and one where most polls show him with a narrow lead, he will be the hot favorite to win a second term in the White House.

No Republican has won the White House without having Ohio in his column.

Obama will travel to another swing state, Virginia, on Tuesday, before flying into Charlotte on Wednesday on the eve of his big convention address.

Blasphemy case: Christian girl's accuser arrested for planting evidence

Pakistani police have arrested Muslim cleric?Khalid Chishti after his deputy came forward to accuse Mr. Chishti of adding burnt pages of the Quran to an evidence submission.

By Taha Siddiqui,?Correspondent / September 2, 2012

Pakistani Muslim girls talk about press gathered outside a mosque, unseen, where police arrested a Muslim cleric Khalid Chishti, in a suburb of Islamabad, Pakistan, Sunday. In the latest twist in a religiously charged case that has focused attention on the country's harsh blasphemy laws, Pakistani police arrested Chishti who they say planted evidence in the case of a Christian girl accused of blasphemy.

A Christian girl accused?of blasphemy in Pakistan may have been framed by a Muslim cleric. Pakistani police arrested the cleric Saturday night, accusing him of tampering with evidence that purported to show she had desecrated the Quran.?

The cleric, Khalid Chishti, was arrested after the deputy cleric of the same mosque came forward with allegations that he saw Mr. Chishti adding burnt pages of Quran to the evidence that was given to the police.

According to the police, Hafiz Mohammad Zubair, the deputy cleric, says he tried to stop Chishti from tampering with the evidence but the cleric insisted that this is the best way to get rid of the Christians in the area.

This latest twist in a case that had already drawn international outcry will add pressure on Pakistani authorities to absolve the girl, still in prison since last month and facing a possible life sentence. The revelations will also bolster campaigners who have tried to amend or repeal the law for years by arguing that many cases are trumped up to persecute minorities or settle local scores.

?It is a sigh of relief because now everyone knows there was victimization of the minor girl,? says Peter Jacob, head of Christian activist group, who provide legal support to minorities in Pakistan.

?This abuse has been ongoing for two and a half decades and with this case coming to light, we can actually see that there are lacunas in the blasphemy law that need to be removed so such abuse does not take place,? says Mr. Jacob, adding that the government should use this opportunity to amend the law. ?If the law cannot be repealed, the state can at least create safeguards, using this case as an example,? Jacob says.

In a televised interview from a few days before, Khalid Chishti had accepted that he spoke about evicting the Christians from his locality, in one of his Friday sermons.

Chaudry Asghar, a local shopkeeper told the Monitor that local elders and religious clerics had?formed a committee a few months back to expel the Christians from the area because they were causing disturbance during Muslim prayers.

?They would play loud music during our call to prayer and the cleric and other elders of the area had warned them several times to stop, but they did not listen to us,? Mr. Asghar says.

Some observers worry that finger pointing between the Muslim and Christian communities may only further politicize the case unless the government acts quickly and carefully.?

Hina Jilani, a human rights lawyer, says she is fearful that religious groups might come out in support of the cleric, and the government needs to stop that from happening by focusing on the legal and technical merits of the case too.

?The medical report says she is a minor and mentally incapable. She should not have been arrested to begin with,? Ms. Jilani says, adding that although the reports of tensions already existing between the Muslims and the Christians in the area are true, the priority of the government should focus on freeing the minor girl.

Asserting that the minor girl?s case should not be politicized, Ms. Jilani however does feel there is a pattern of persecution of minorities all over the country and historically it was linked with local grievances like property disputes and personal enmity.

But increasingly it is becoming a matter of ?purifying? the society, she says. ?Over the years, persecution of Christians is increasing in Pakistan. There are less than 2 percent left, and yet religious extremists still feel Islam is under a threat from them?? she says, adding that there are laws dealing with people who incite communal violence but the application of that law is weak.

?The government needs to stop being scared of religious lobbies and exercise its authority to stop such elements that provoke hatred amongst different communities in Pakistan,? she added.

The next hearing of the case will take place on Monday, while the cleric, who was presented in court today, has been handed to police for fourteen days to investigate if he did tamper with the evidence. If proven guilty, legal experts say he can be charged under the same blasphemy law under which the minor girl was accused.

Elderly California Driver, 100, Hurts 11 Children and 3 Adults ...

We all remember the freedom, the thrill, the excitement of getting our driver?s license as young people, and with it the wonderful realization that we could go anywhere, anytime, as long as we had wheels.

That exhilaration and freedom doesn?t go away as we get older, but unfortunately, our skills can deteriorate as we age, slowing our reaction times and reflexes and causing our eyesight and other senses to weaken.

It can create a dilemma for our loved ones and for government agencies ? no one wants to pull driver?s licenses from older drivers without good reason, but older drivers can sometimes put themselves and others in danger by driving when their vehicle operating skills are no longer safe.

The issue was highlighted this week when a 100-year-old man in South Los Angeles accidentally struck 11 school children and three adults as he backed his car up across from a school shortly after he children were dismissed for the day, according to a story in The Los Angeles Times.

The issue of elderly drivers on the roads is again in the news. Image credit: ? iStockphoto.com/dszc

The victims, who ranged in age from 14-months-old to 48-years-old, were struck Aug. 29 by a Cadillac being driven by Preston Carter, who will turn 101 on Sept. 1, the story reported. The driver has a current driver?s license and no history of traffic violations, the California Department of Motor Vehicles told The Times. ?Los Angeles Police Department traffic detectives were looking at whether Carter mistakenly hit his accelerator pedal instead of the brake shortly before he rammed into the crowd about 2:30 p.m.?

Three of the children remained hospitalized on Aug. 30, but were expected to recover, according to a story from The Associated Press.

Police believe that the driver simply made a ?miscalculation,? a police officer told The Times. Carter allegedly told police that his ?brakes had failed.?

Luckily for everyone involved, no one was killed in this incident, which certainly could have been far more tragic.

But as it stands, it again brings to light the delicate issue of older drivers and when and how to decide if their declining skills mean that they should no longer be legally permitted to drive.

Several similar incidents occurred in the Philadelphia area in late 2011. Last December, an 80-year-old woman in Pennsville, N.J., rammed into an optician?s office that she was visiting when she hit the gas by mistake, while last November, an 84-year-old woman plowed into the Once Again Thrift Shop in Berks County, striking two toddlers, according to reports from The Philadelphia Inquirer. In another crash last November, a 79-year-old woman died when she drove off Route 73 and into a Marlton pond.

And in September 2011, an 89-year-old Haverford man killed his daughter and injured his wife when he ran them over in his driveway after he accidentally pressed the wrong foot pedal in his car, the Inquirer reported. In July 2011, an 85-year-old man drove his big Mercury Grand Marquis into a fast food restaurant at 8th and Market streets in Philadelphia, injuring six people inside the restaurant.

After this week?s crash, Carter?s daughter told news reporters that he will no longer be driving and will give his car away, according to a story by CNN.com. He didn?t have a history of any prior traffic violations on his driving record.

It is a difficult thing to tell someone who has been driving for decades that they should no longer continue to drive for safety reasons, but it is a necessary step at the appropriate time for many elderly drivers.

In Pennsylvania, drivers over 65 years of age must renew their driver?s licenses every two years by law, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).? And by law, doctors and other medical personnel who are authorized to diagnose or treat disorders and disabilities such as Alzheimer?s disease, Parkinson?s disease, dementia and other debilitating conditions, must report such cases to PennDOT in writing so that the cases of those individuals are investigated, according to the NHTSA. Physicians and other medical personnel are given immunity from civil or criminal actions involving such drivers as long as they report such cases when they come to their attention.

To discuss the issue, PennDOT has created several online resources to help educate older drivers and their families about how to analyze and approach the matter together. PennDOT?s JustDrivePA.org Web site offers safety tips for older drivers, as well as warning signs for when older drivers should stop driving.

?Since driving is such a critical form of transportation for the older driver, it is also a very difficult decision to make,? the Web site states. ?There is no clear cut factor to look at in terms of stopping driving; however, PennDOT continually seeks to balance the safety of our roadways with the impact of loss of independence, autonomy, and mobility of the older driver.?

Some of the safety tips include:

  • Having regular eye and medical exams to ensure that near and distance vision is adequate to drive safely.
  • Aging eyes become more sensitive to bright light and glare, so limit nighttime driving and try to avoid looking directly into headlights of approaching vehicles.
  • Avoid stressful driving situations such as rush hour travel, driving at night or driving in bad weather. Plan trips for daytime hours after 9 a.m. and before 5 p.m. to avoid rush hour traffic. Plan ahead. Know your route and try to stay on familiar roads.
  • Avoid travelling in bad weather, if at all possible.
  • Avoid taking medications before driving. Many medications, prescription and over-the-counter, cause drowsiness and can affect safe driving.
  • Make sure your driver?s seat and mirrors are properly adjusted prior to beginning a trip.
  • Maintain a safe speed and look ahead. Controlling your speed and looking down the road for possible hazards allow you to make adjustments before encountering a problem.
  • Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you. A four-second gap between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you is recommended.
  • When driving long distances, especially in winter, call ahead for weather and road condition updates.

Signs that it may be time for an elderly person to stop driving include:

  • Feeling uncomfortable, nervous or fearful when driving.
  • Unexplained dents and scrapes on the car, fences, mailboxes, garage doors, etc.
  • Frequent ?close calls? (i.e. almost crashing).
  • Getting lost.
  • Slowed response to unexpected situations.
  • Being easily distracted or having a hard time concentrating while driving.
  • Difficulty staying in the lane of traffic.
  • Trouble paying attention to signals, road signs and pavement markings.
  • Trouble judging gaps in traffic at intersections or highway entrance/exit ramps.
  • Medical conditions or medications which may be affecting abilities to handle a car safely.
  • Frequent traffic tickets or ?warnings? by traffic or law enforcement officers in the last two years.

Organizations such as the AAA (American Automobile Association) offer self-assessment tools for older drivers, including this self-rating form which can help an older driver realistically evaluate his or her motor vehicle skills.

There are even PennDOT-approved Basic and Refresher Mature Driver Improvement courses which are offered throughout the Commonwealth by AAA, AARP and by Seniors for Safe Driving.

Pennsylvania also has a Mature Drivers Task Force (MDTF), which was established in 2000 to ensure that mature drivers and pedestrians in Pennsylvania are safe and feel safe while traveling the state?s highways and interstates. ?Mobility is essential to everyone?s quality of life,? according to the task force. ?The loss of mobility can be devastating to the lives of older Pennsylvanians, and most of us want to drive for as long as we safely can. Many older people are capable, and have a lifetime of valuable driving experience behind them to draw upon.?

PennDOT has also put together a useful pamphlet, ?Talking With Older Drivers: A Guide for Family and Friends,? to assist family members or friends when it is time to discuss these issues with elderly drivers in their lives.

It?s a touchy, difficult subject to bridge with the older drivers in our lives.

But it?s a discussion that we must have to protect older drivers who might be at risk, as well as other drivers, pedestrians and others in society who stand to be harmed by elderly persons who are no longer safe vehicle operators.

It?s a talk that every family needs to have with parents and older relatives as they age. We have to help make the difficult decision with our older relatives.

Compassion, understanding, love and concern are all a part of the discussion. It is not easy, but when the time comes, it is for the safety of everyone involved.

1929 Wall Street Stock Market Crash

The most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States; Its from my favorite documentary by PBS - New York. This particular part about Wall Street crash of 1929 is from episode 5 of the series with title: Cosmopolis there are lots of archive photos, footages and drawings throughout the series and in my opinion it was great work done with finding them. series website: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/newyork/series/index.html "Archival shoots took place at various historical and cultural institutions, including the New-York Historical Society, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Library of Congress, and focused on the filming of particularly rare or large-scale archival prints, lithographs, maps, and photographs"

Italian Recipes for Italian Kitchenettes | Europe Forum | Fodor's ...

Hey Guys!

26 more days until we leave for Italy!!

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share some of your favorite recipes that I might be able to whip up while staying in kitchenette-outfitted apartments in Rome, Manarola and Venice...

I LOVE cooking, consider myself of intermediate ability, and have recently been informed by my best-friend/travel partner that she fully expects me to cook for her on this trip :) I am MORE than happy to oblige, however, I do not get to explore authentic Italian cooking very often at home, as my husband is so picky, I pretty much feed him the same dinner that I make my almost 2-year-old. I did, however, make a very successful Pasta Carbonara one night that we almost died for :)

We are very much looking forward to shopping for fresh ingredients in the markets, and as I am a complete novice in that department, I welcome any tips and information you could provide, especially concerning etiquette (such as not touching the food but asking for permission), weights and measures, and in season specialties for late September-October.

Thanks in advance for all the help. I sincerely hope everyone enjoys a wonderful Labor Day weekend!
