Romney tries a retool with NASCAR race fans

RICHMOND, Virginia (Reuters) - Mitt Romney tried another lap around the track on Saturday to win over NASCAR stock-car racing fans, but rain put the brakes on his plan.

The Republican presidential candidate visited a NASCAR race on Saturday night in Virginia, targeting white male voters in a swing state where early voting begins in two weeks.

Romney joined Republican Virginia Senate candidate George Allen in serving hotdogs to fans under a tent at the Richmond International Raceway, and hundreds passed through asking for autographs and offering Romney words of support.

Romney struggled to connect with blue-collar fans of NASCAR at the Daytona 500 event in February when he said he had "some friends who are NASCAR team owners."

The comment opened the former private equity executive to criticism that he was out of touch with ordinary voters.

On Saturday, a driving rain delayed the Federated Auto Parts 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and sent most of the fans running for cover.

When asked who his favorite driver was, Romney responded: "There's a lot of drivers I like."

Romney needs to win among white men by a healthy margin to offset the advantages President Barack Obama enjoys with women as well as black and Hispanic voters. A Reuters/Ipsos poll last week showed Romney with a 20 percentage-point lead among white, male voters.

The sport has grown immensely in popularity, and political visits to NASCAR tracks have become a common tactic of Republicans eager to win over white male voters.

"Romney enjoys considerable support in the NASCAR community," according to a report on NASCAR.com. "In mid-August, NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France and team owner Rick Hendrick hosted a fundraiser for the Republican nominee at the Duke Mansion in the upscale Myers Park section of Charlotte."

Fans of the sport usually root for a specific driver or racing team.

The Romney campaign had hoped Saturday's visit would help it with racing fans in other battleground states like New Hampshire, Ohio and North Carolina.

"NASCAR voters are everywhere," said senior adviser Kevin Madden, adding it was an "incredible opportunity to get a whole bunch of people together in one spot and meet as many voters as possible."

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll daily tracking poll on Saturday showed Obama, a Democrat, widening his national lead over Romney to 4 points.

VIRGINIA RACE

Virginia is among a handful of states that begins early voting well before the presidential debates in the autumn and the November 6 election.

Early voting in the state starts on September 21, and while early voters are typically partisans who make up their minds early, Romney made a push on Saturday to maximize their impact.

The state is a critical part of Romney's strategy after Obama won Virginia in 2008 with almost 53 percent of the vote, making him the first Democrat to carry the state since President Lyndon Johnson in 1964.

Republicans see a number of points of attack to return the state to their column, seizing on proposed defense cuts that could cost thousands of jobs in a state like Virginia, which is home to several military bases.

As part of the deal between Obama and congressional Republicans in the summer of 2011, the Pentagon could be forced to cut $1 trillion at the start of 2013 if other cuts are not identified and agreed upon.

Romney has repeatedly accused Obama of spearheading those military cuts, and the Republican has used the agreement to try to paint Obama as weak on defense.

Romney held a rally on Saturday at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, speaking to a crowd in a hangar surrounded by military aircraft.

"I will not cut our military," Romney said. "I will maintain our military commitment."

Romney also sought to play to conservative Virginia voters, after Democrats suffered a snafu at their convention in North Carolina this week over the word "God" being removed from the Democratic platform.

After breaking into an impromptu pledge of allegiance during his remarks, Romney won big cheers from the crowd by proclaiming, "That pledge says under God."

"I will not take God out of our platform. I will not take God off our coins, and I will not take God out of my heart," Romney said.

7 Things First Time Home Buyers Should Know - Albuquerque Real ...

? Posted by Rich Cederberg on Sep 7, 2012 in For Buyers | 2 comments

?

First time home buyers have so much to learn about buying their first home that it can be overwhelming. ?To help get you up to speed here is part one of two posts called ?Things First Time Home Buyers Should Know.?

?

  • Most first time home buyers put only 3.5% down.?You don?t need 20%.
  • You can buy for as little as $500 down.?This is called an MFA loan, and if you qualify it?s a great deal, not all lenders like to do them, so you should ask me who will one for you.
  • Your total mortgage payment will include principal, interest, taxes and insurance (PITI).?Sometimes you?ll see just principal and interest advertised.
  • Not all homes qualify for all loan types. Those incredibly low priced fixer uppers? You usually need cash or conventional financing (no FHA, no VA)
  • You can?t overpay for a home. Your lender will order an appraisal to make this doesn?t happen.
  • One Realtor can show you all the homes you want to see. I can show you any home whether it?s listed by Coldwell Banker, RE/MAX, Century 21 or anyone else.
  • You should get prequalified first. You?ll need a letter from a lender stating that you are qualified to buy when you make an offer.

I hope this answers some of your home buying questions. Are there any specific questions you?d like to ask? Post them in the comment section here and I will answer them for you.

Southwest China quakes kill 64

BEIJING, Sept 7 (AFP): At least 64 people were killed and 550 injured when two quakes struck a remote and mountainous area of southwest China Friday, toppling buildings and pushing panicked crowds into the streets, officials and observers said.

Residents described how people ran out of buildings screaming as the two quakes hit on the border of southwestern Yunnan and Guizhou provinces an hour apart around the middle of the day followed by a string of aftershocks.

Television footage showed people running from damaged buildings and streets strewn with fallen bricks and rocks in Yunnan province's Yiliang district, which appeared to be worst hit.

The Xinhua news agency said 64 people had been killed and rescuers have rushed to the area. Authorities are sending thousands of tents, quilts and coats, and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao is also heading to the area, it said.

The Yiliang county government said on its website that 556 people had been injured, while an online statement from the public affairs bureau in Zhaotong city, which overseas Yiliang, put the figure at 150.

The Zhaotong statement also said 100,000 people were made homeless by the disaster, and at least 20,000 houses collapsed or were damaged.

Altogether 700,000 people have been affected, it said.

The death toll could still rise as some villages remain blocked by landslides and the worst-hit areas may have lost power and communications, Xinhua said, citing local officials.

"The hardest part of the rescue now is traffic," Li Fuchun, the head Luozehe township, identified as the epicentre, was quoted as saying. "Roads are blocked and rescuers have to climb mountains to reach hard-hit villagers."

Rocks as tall as four meters (13 feet) crashed into mountain roads and landslides were also triggered, the report said.

The death toll may have been higher because of the area's denser population, with 205 people per square kilometer compared to 117 across the province, said Huang Pugang, head of the Yunnan seismological bureau, according to Xinhua.

In addition the epicentres of both major quakes were located just five to 15 kilometres from the county seat, he said, while the homes and buildings in the poor area might not have been built to withstand strong quakes.

Footage broadcast on state television network CCTV showed hundreds of people crowded into a sports field in Yiliang, a sprawling town surrounded by green mountains.

Oil prices dragged down by economic headwinds

The oil market found little to motivate it Wednesday. That should change in the next two days.

Benchmark oil rose 6 cents to end at $95.36 per barrel in New York. Weak manufacturing reports earlier in the week from China and the U.S., as well as Europe's dire economic picture, weighed on trader sentiment. But that was countered by hope for measures from central banks and governments to promote global economic growth. Such steps could translate into more demand for energy products.

Two upcoming developments provide a better sense of what's ahead for the global economy. And what direction oil prices will head.

The European Central Bank is expected to announce a bond-buying program Thursday to reduce high borrowing costs in Spain and Italy. The program is designed to help stabilize the region's financial crisis and promote growth.

If the ECB falls short of expectations, that would heighten concerns about a regional recession and lower oil prices, said oil analyst Gene McGillian of Tradition Energy.

He speculated that the price could drop into the mid-$80 per barrel range. Oil's low for the year was $77.69 per barrel in late June.

On Friday, the U.S. government comes out with its latest jobs report. Oil could rise with another positive report. On Aug. 3 the government reported the best monthly job growth since early in the year, and the price of oil rose 5 percent.

Meanwhile, average gas prices were unchanged overnight at $3.824

per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell $1.09 to $113.09 per barrel in London.

In other futures trading in New York:

? Heating oil fell 2.92 cents to end at $3.1176 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline fell 0.24 cent to end at $2.9498 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 5.9 cents to end at $2.795 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Survey: cell phone users concerned about privacy

NEW YORK (AP) ? Many cellphone users say they have decided not to use an app on their phone because of concerns about privacy.

More than half of Americans who use apps say they have decided not to install one once they found out how much personal information they'd have to share, according to a study released Wednesday from the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

Mobile apps include maps, games and other programs that help turn smartphones into portable computers. Some apps, for instance, want to know a person's location using the phone's GPS function.

Thirty percent of app users say they have removed an app once they found out how much information it collected about them.

Android and iPhone users were equally likely to remove or not install an app because of concerns over how much personal information it collected, according to the study.

In all, 88 percent of adults said they own some sort of a mobile phone, and 43 percent of that group downloaded applications to their phone. That's up from 31 percent in 2011.

Among other findings:

? 30 percent of smartphone owners said they turned off their phone's location tracking feature because they were worried about people or companies accessing this information. That compares with just 7 percent for those with regular, basic cellphones.

? 41 percent of all cellphone owners said they backed up data on their phone, such as photos or contacts.

? Men were more likely than women to delete an app because of privacy concerns. But there was no gender difference among people who decided not to install apps in the first place due to privacy concerns.

? Those with BlackBerrys were the most likely to say they've lost their phone or had it stolen: 45 percent compared with 30 percent of iPhone owners and 36 percent of Android owners. In all, nearly one-third of all mobile phone owners said they have had their phone lost or stolen.

? That said, people who have had their phone lost or stolen were no more likely to back up the information on their phones afterward.

The national survey was conducted among 2,254 U.S. adults from March 15 to April 3 on landlines and cell phones. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.

Home Design Tips for Baby Boomers ~ Interior, Longevity | Schiavi ...

Posted by ACyr on September 6, 2012 in Home Decor, Home Design, Modular Homes | 0 comments

This is the final blog in our Home Designs Tips for Baby Boomers series.? Previously we have given tips for the Exterior of the home, the functionality and livability of the design.? In this blog we will look at how to design a home for longevity.

Designing a home for longevity simply means you are thinking ahead to prepare for what you might require in a home 20 years from now?? For now a home designed like any other home may suit you just fine, but in the future you may have accessibility issues to deal with.? Does that mean you have to have a bathroom full of grab bars and hand rails in your hallways.? NO!? But there are steps you can take to prepare your home.

1. Have your builder ?prep? your bathrooms for grab bars.? This may entail extra blocking for grab bars to be installed at a later date.? Do not skip your guest bathrooms? chances are you will have visitors similar to your age periodically who may appreciate the availability of a grab bar.

?

2. Upgrade to lever handles throughout your home.? These handles are a bit of an upgrade, but make entrance into rooms easier than knobs.? And the practicality of this is disguised with ?I like the elegant look better than the plain old knob??

?

3. Transitions between flooring materials can be a trip hazard.? The same can be said for high pile or plush carpeting.? Talk to your builder about flooring options.

?

?

4. Opt for wider?? Wider doors, wider hallways.? 3? doors allow most wheelchair to pass through.? This would make your hallways a minimum recommended 3?6?.

?

?

5. Take a look at your kitchen design.? Focus on height.? Anything you currently have to use a step stool to reach is a fall waiting to happen.? Optimize base cabinets with drawer, pull out shelves and lazy susans.? Add pantry cabinets or closets to give you more accessible storage areas.

?

These 5 simple tips can ensure that your home will support you and allow you to enjoy your home as you grow older.

Next up in our Home Tips Series, we will look at designs for Generation X.
