Council Bluffs officials await water test results
January 10, 2013 15:07 GMT

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) -- Council Bluffs officials expect the boil advisory to remain in effect until the city water tests out safely.

The advisory was issued after a water main break early Wednesday caused a drop in pressure. That could have allowed contaminants to enter the lines, posing a danger to health.

Council Bluffs Water Works director Doug Drummey says water samples take 24 hours to complete and says he's hoping to know by noon Thursday whether the water is safe to drink.

Schools that use city water have contacted parents and encouraged them to send bottled water with their children. The schools are taking special precautions with school meals and many also have bottled water on hand.

Holmes took creepy self-portraits before shootings

[Updated at 2:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. MT]

CENTENNIAL, Colo.? Photos recovered from James Holmes? iPhone show the alleged gunman posing with weapons and making creepy faces in the weeks and hours before the shooting massacre at an Aurora movie theater.

The images were not released to the public, but were shown in court Wednesday during Holmes' preliminary hearing.

It was the state's final move before declaring that it had presented overwhelming evidence that Holmes meticulously planned and executed the attack without remorse.

"Because he wanted to kill all of them, and he knew what he was doing," prosecutor Karen Pearson said in arguing that the case should go to trial.

One of the more disturbing self-portraits was snapped on July 12. It shows his infamous orange-dyed hair flaring out from beneath a black skull cap. His eye color is darkened by black contact lenses, and he is grinning with his tongue sticking out.

Three other self-portraits were snapped approximately six hours before the movie theater shooting. In those photos he is also wearing black contact lenses and making various faces. In one of them, he's holding up one of two semi-automatic pistols he had recently purchased.

"He has a large, toothy smile," Aurora police Sgt. Matthew Fyle said from the witnesses stand.

In two others from July 19, he is posing with parts of homemade bombs he allegedly built. A final photo from July 19 shows an arsenal of guns and black tactical clothing sprawled across a red sheet on his bed.

A self-portrait taken on July 5 shows Holmes with orange-dyed hair and dressed in black combat gear with an assault-like rifle being carried from his shoulder.

Other photos recovered from Holmes'?iPhone lead police to believe he began casing the Century 16 theater a month before the shootings.

Four photos taken on June 29, July 5 and July 11 show various interior and exterior images of the movie theater, including doorways, hallways and sidewalks.

Holmes? lead public defender, Daniel King, did not present evidence or call witnesses during this phase of the case.

?I have no argument to probable cause,? King said. ?This is not a trial.?

King said anything he would present would speak to Holmes? mental illness, and this was not the time to do so.

Judge William Sylvester did not make a ruling at the end of Wednesday's preliminary hearing. He recessed the court until 9 a.m. MT on Friday when he will announce if the evidence presented is enough to move forward with a trial. An arraignment may be held the same day. If so, Holmes' defense attorneys could plead not guilty to preserve Holmes' right to a jury trial.

[Updated at 9:30 a.m. ET/7:30 a.m. MT]

CENTENNIAL, Colo.?Aurora police Sgt. Matthew Fyles, who has supervised the Aurora movie theater massacre investigation, is scheduled to take the stand when the preliminary hearing resumes at 9 a.m. MT.

Prosecutors said late Tuesday that Fyles will be the last witness for the state. It is unknown if shooting suspect James Holmes' defense team will call its own witnesses.

The purpose of the hearing is for District Judge William Sylvester to determine if there is evidence to try Holmes on 166 counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder. Colorado allows dual filing of charges (essentially premeditated and without remorse). Twelve people were killed and 58 wounded in the shooting. An additional 13 suffered nongunshot injuries as a result of the rampage.

Holmes, a former neuroscience doctoral student at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, has been held without bond and in isolation since being arrested without resistance behind the theater minutes after the massacre.

Retooling Pap test to spot more kinds of cancer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For years, doctors have lamented that there's no Pap test for deadly ovarian cancer. Wednesday, scientists reported encouraging signs that one day, there might be.

Researchers are trying to retool the Pap, a test for cervical cancer that millions of women get, so that it could spot early signs of other gynecologic cancers, too.

How? It turns out that cells can flake off of tumors in the ovaries or the lining of the uterus, and float down to rest in the cervix, where Pap tests are performed. These cells are too rare to recognize under the microscope. But researchers from Johns Hopkins University used some sophisticated DNA testing on the Pap samples to uncover the evidence ? gene mutations that show cancer is present.

In a pilot study, they analyzed Pap smears from 46 women who already were diagnosed with either ovarian or endometrial cancer. The new technique found all the endometrial cancers and 41 percent of the ovarian tumors, the team reported Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

This is very early-stage research, and women shouldn't expect any change in their routine Paps. It will take years of additional testing to prove if the so-called PapGene technique really could work as a screening tool, used to spot cancer in women who thought they were healthy.

"Now the hard work begins," said Hopkins oncologist Dr. Luis Diaz, whose team is collecting hundreds of additional Pap samples for more study and is exploring ways to enhance the detection of ovarian cancer.

But if it ultimately pans out, "the neat part about this is, the patient won't feel anything different," and the Pap wouldn't be performed differently, Diaz added. The extra work would come in a lab.

The gene-based technique marks a new approach toward cancer screening, and specialists are watching closely.

"This is very encouraging, and it shows great potential," said American Cancer Society genetics expert Michael Melner.

"We are a long way from being able to see any impact on our patients," cautioned Dr. Shannon Westin of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She reviewed the research in an accompanying editorial, and said the ovarian cancer detection would need improvement if the test is to work.

But she noted that ovarian cancer has poor survival rates because it's rarely caught early. "If this screening test could identify ovarian cancer at an early stage, there would be a profound impact on patient outcomes and mortality," Westin said.

More than 22,000 U.S. women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and more than 15,000 die. Symptoms such as pain and bloating seldom are obvious until the cancer is more advanced, and numerous attempts at screening tests have failed.

Endometrial cancer affects about 47,000 women a year, and kills about 8,000. There is no screening test for it either, but most women are diagnosed early because of postmenopausal bleeding.

The Hopkins research piggybacks on one of the most successful cancer screening tools, the Pap, and a newer technology used along with it. With a standard Pap, a little brush scrapes off cells from the cervix, which are stored in a vial to examine for signs of cervical cancer. Today, many women's Paps undergo an additional DNA-based test to see if they harbor the HPV virus, which can spur cervical cancer.

So the Hopkins team, funded largely by cancer advocacy groups, decided to look for DNA evidence of other gynecologic tumors. It developed a method to rapidly screen the Pap samples for those mutations using standard genetics equipment that Diaz said wouldn't add much to the cost of a Pap-plus-HPV test. He said the technique could detect both early-stage and more advanced tumors. Importantly, tests of Paps from 14 healthy women turned up no false alarms.

The endometrial cancers may have been easier to find because cells from those tumors don't have as far to travel as ovarian cancer cells, Diaz said. Researchers will study whether inserting the Pap brush deeper, testing during different times of the menstrual cycle, or other factors might improve detection of ovarian cancer.

Eyeson with LG's Smart Sound Bar

Among the many, many things that LG is unveiling at CES this year is the curious addition of a sound bar with built-in video streaming. That still sounds like a contradiction of purpose to us, but the Smart Sound Bar, also known as the NB3730A, is more fascinating once you dive into the details. The large-sized bar pumps out 300W across its 2.1 channels, and its WiFi takes internet audio and video from CinemaNow, general internet radio, Netflix, Pandora and Vudu. Bluetooth audio is built-in as well. It's ultimately built for those who don't have an online-capable TV, Blu-ray player or media hub at their disposal -- a group whose ranks are thinning quickly, but certainly still exists.

We got a quick glance at the Smart Sound Bar for ourselves. From a design perspective, it's simple to operate and thin, if not exactly short. This won't be a good fit for that small TV in the basement, then, although it's perfect for that big wall-mounted set. We'd like to tell you how well it works in real life, but expo conditions dictate otherwise: LG unfortunately lacks an internet connection for the sound bar on demo, and an extra-crowded booth isn't the ideal environment for gauging audio quality. If you're mostly wondering whether or not it will fit into the living room decor, however, we've got a gallery for you below.
