Glass shape influences how quickly we drink alcohol

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2012) ? The speed at which we drink alcohol may be influenced by the shape of the glass we drink from, according to new research from the University of Bristol, published in PLoS ONE. This could be a target to help control the problematic levels of drunkenness that are becoming increasingly common in our society.

Dr Angela Attwood and colleagues from Bristol's School of Experimental Psychology recruited 160 social drinkers aged 18-40 with no history of alcoholism to attend two experimental sessions. At one session they were asked to drink either lager or a non-alcoholic soft drink from either a straight-sided glass or a curved 'beer flute'.

The participants were almost twice as slow when drinking alcohol from the straight-sided glass compared to the curved glass. There was no difference in drinking rates from the glasses when the drink was non-alcoholic.

The researchers suggest that the reason for this may be because it is more difficult to accurately judge the halfway point of shaped glasses. As a result, drinkers are less able to gauge how much they have consumed.

In order to test this, participants attended another session in which they completed a computer task that presented numerous pictures of the two glasses containing varying volumes of liquid. By asking participants to judge whether the glass was more or less than half full, the researchers were able to show that there was greater error in accurately judging the halfway point of the curved glass.

Importantly, the degree of this error seemed to be associated with the speed of drinking. That is, the participants who tended to show the greatest error in their halfway judgments tended to show the greatest changes in drinking rate.

The speed at which an alcoholic beverage is drunk will influence the level of intoxication experienced, and also the number of drinks consumed in a single drinking session. Therefore, slowing drinking rates is likely to have positive impact for the individual and also at a population level.

Dr Attwood said: "Due to the personal and societal harms associated with heavy bouts of drinking, there has been a lot of recent interest in alcohol control strategies. While many people drink alcohol responsibly, it is not difficult to have 'one too many' and become intoxicated. Because of the negative effects alcohol has on decision making and control of behaviour, this opens us up to a number of risks.

"People often talk of 'pacing themselves' when drinking alcohol as a means of controlling levels of drunkenness, and I think the important point to take from our research is that the ability to pace effectively may be compromised when drinking from certain types of glasses."

Princess Diana 15 Years Later - Where Were You?

Today marks the 15th anniversary of Princess Diana?s death in a car crash in Paris. At the time her car wrecked in the Pont de l?Alma tunnel, Princess Di was a princess in name only??the People?s Princess??and the world?s most photographed and intriguing celebrity.

Diana funeral 590x336 Princess Di 15 Years Later Where Were You?

I?ve never really been able to articulate why I cared about Diana so much, being a) not British b) not a royalist and c) not all that interested in people who were not me ath the time she died. (I mean, I was 16 ? is there really a more narcissistic age outside of your toddler years?) But when I came home from an evening out with friends to find my best friend?s mom on the couch watching the news with a blank look on her face, I realized I did care. A lot. Diana was good at making people care.

And I mean, people cared. Like, on an ?erect a ridiculously schmaltzy memorial in the middle of a department store? level.

She had a relatability that evaded the rest of the royal family. Diana was far from perfect?she showed emotion where other royals displayed a more customary upper-crust stoicism. She battled an eating disorder, a huge self esteem problem, and a deep need to be loved. She ended an unhappy marriage?a choice most royals don?t make easily unless their name is Henry VIII?and people celebrated her for it. She?held babies dying of AIDS before it was common knowledge that you couldn?t catch it that way. Figuring cameras were going to follow her wherever she went anyway, Diana pointed them toward the things she wanted us to pay attention to?disease, famine, the minefields of Angola.

princess diana 590x390 Princess Di 15 Years Later Where Were You?

So, yeah, I cared when she died. I cared even more when I saw how profoundly it affected others around the world.

15 years later, the dust has settled enough that a biopic called Diana is on its way, starring Naomi Watts in the title role. While TV movies and miniseries have flogged aspects of her story to death already, the upcoming film is a feature motion picture headed to the big screen and will focus on the final two years of Diana?s life, including her relationship with Dodi Fayed and rumored affair with Dr. Hasnad Khan.

But I care less about that than I care about your Princess Di story. Where were you when you heard the news? If you don?t remember that or it?s not worth telling, did you watch the funeral in your parents? house with a box of tissues on your left and a box of Fig Newtons on your right like I did? I asked some past and present MamaPop writers to share their memories, but most of them were really high on drugs at that time and couldn?t tell me much:

John Cave Osborne: I was absolutely hammered at a Beck show in Seattle and found out while leaving, then went to a restaurant in Eastlake called Bandeleone and drank kicken-chicken with a splash of water while discussing the tragedy with the other (also-drunk) patrons before finally going home and embarking upon a 48-hour CNN bender which made me realize i kinda cared about Princess Di more than i?d realized.

The Muskrat:?I?d just moved to Atlanta for my first job after school. My folks were helping me move furniture into the place from a U-Haul, and we?d hooked a TV up to the wall and set it on the carpet so I could see the first Alabama football game (where I?d just finished four years of school) on Saturday. We were up late finishing arranging furniture when we learned of the car wreck on that TV sitting on the carpet. We didn?t realize she?d died until Sunday morning.?Like John, I didn?t think I gave a shit about British royalty when I was 22, but when I learned about all the great things she did from CNN that Sunday, I realized I did, in fact, care.

Miss Banshee:?I was home from college, on the phone with my psychotic boyfriend when the news broke. I was shocked, but never said anything to him because I was afraid he?d make fun of me for caring. And I wonder why I?ve given up dating. Sheesh.

?

John Travolta and Princess Diana 590x396 Princess Di 15 Years Later Where Were You?

Julie Marsh:??I remember getting in a fight with [my husband] at a Denny?s in Puerto Rico where we got stuck en route to our honeymoon, because he didn?t understand why her death bothered me so much.

Adam Avitable:??I remember the Princess Diana jokes I told afterward.??Her death, just like her life, had absolutely no impact on my life. Yes, it?s sad, as any death is, but I didn?t find it more tragic than anyone else?s.

Laurie White: I was sitting at a stop light leaving my gym. Drove home crying. I was one of the little girls who got up and watched the wedding live, I had books about her, all of it. I was happy for her that she?d seemed to come out of that really hard?period of her life, had gotten healthier, was doing so much for others, maybe in a place to find love again. And then, done. So, so sad.?I also wish I had a story as good as JCO?s, so now I?m crying again.

Amalah:?I don?t remember where I was when Princess Di died, but I remember watching the funeral in the cafeteria just a couple days after arriving at college. Girls were crying at the next table. Crying! It was the first time I was attending a *secular* non-Christian college and I felt really weird for not ?getting? what the big deal was or caring as much as most people seemed to. And in that moment I pledged to fully commit myself to popular culture and never feel left out again and one day launch a website dedicated to stupid celebrities, bad television and finally provide a forum where people could talk about where they were when Princess Diana died the end.

Lenovo hasn't taken much care to enshroud its trio of newly announced Android slates in any kind of secrecy. The tabs have been teased on the company's site for some time, but that's not holding the Chinese outfit back from making an official announcement at IFA 2012. Taking a slight step down in size from the S2110, the 9-inch IdeaTab A2109 ups the internal ante of its more premium stablemate with a 1.2GHz quad-core Tegra 3 buffered by 1GB DDR3 RAM, while also packing in a 1280 x 800 LED display, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing / 3-megapixel rear cameras, SRS sound, ports for a 3.5mm headphone jack, micro-USB and micro-HDMI. And for users more accustomed to quality builds, the slate shouldn't disappointed as its rear encasement is of the all aluminum variety and lending to its 1.3 pounds (570g) of bulk. Storage for this Android 4.0 slate is not as robust as its larger counterpart, but the 16GB allotted is expandable via microSD. The tab's already available online and at BestBuy, so if you want to call this your own, prepare to part with $299.

Aspirin-clopidogrel no better than aspirin alone for patients with lacunar stroke, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Aspirin combined with the antiplatelet drug clopidogrel is no better than aspirin alone for stroke prevention in people with a history of lacunar strokes, and the combination carries a greater risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, according to results of a trial funded by the National Institutes of Health. Lacunar strokes occur due to chronic high blood pressure and typically produce small lesions deep within the brain.

The trial results also point to an overall improvement in stroke management during the past decade. Regardless of whether patients received aspirin alone or the dual therapy, their stroke risk was reduced more than three-fold from what it was 10 years ago.

Antiplatelet drugs such as aspirin are routinely prescribed to help prevent new strokes in people with a history of lacunar stroke. The Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes (SPS3) trial was designed to determine if adding clopidogrel to aspirin would offer better protection than aspirin alone. The results appear in the Aug. 30th New England Journal of Medicine.* They show that the aspirin-clopidogrel combination was about equal to aspirin in reducing the risk of any type of stroke, but it almost doubled the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

"For all stroke therapeutics, there is a need to balance the potential benefits against the risks. The SPS3 findings establish that for lacunar stroke, dual therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel carries significant risk and minimal benefit," said Walter Koroshetz, M.D., deputy director of National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health.

The SPS3 trial is funded by NINDS and led by Oscar R. Benavente, M.D., research director of the Stroke and Cerebrovascular Health program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia.

In addition to comparing dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin, the trial was designed to test two levels of blood pressure control. After an interim data analysis in August 2011, the antiplatelet component of the trial was stopped. NIH also issued a clinical alert, warning that there was "little likelihood of benefit in favor of aspirin plus clopidogrel [for] recurrent stroke should the study continue to conclusion." The blood pressure component of the trial is ongoing, and the trial participants have been encouraged to continue taking aspirin without clopidogrel.

Strokes occur when blood vessels that supply the brain rupture or become blocked, such as by a blood clot. Antiplatelet drugs interfere with the formation of blood clots.

Lacunar strokes occur due to chronic high blood pressure, which in turn leads to progressive narrowing and finally blockage of small arteries that supply deep brain structures. They account for up to one-fifth of all strokes and are especially common among African-Americans, Hispanics and people with diabetes. Although lacunar strokes tend to produce relatively small lesions, they can cause disability depending on where they occur in the brain.

The SPS3 trial involves more than 3,000 participants at 82 clinical centers in North and South America and in Spain. The participants are age 30 and older, and all had a recent history of lacunar stroke prior to enrollment. About 52 percent are white, 31 percent Hispanic and 17 percent black.

For the antiplatelet component of the trial, about half of the participants received 325 milligrams of aspirin and 75 milligrams of clopidogrel daily, and the other half received aspirin and placebo. The participants were also randomly assigned to receive either standard control of systolic blood pressure (less than 130 mm Hg) or aggressive control (130-149 mm Hg).

After eight years of study, the annual risk of recurrent stroke was 2.7 percent in the aspirin-only group and 2.5 percent in the aspirin plus clopidogrel group. Most of the recurrent strokes in both groups were lacunar strokes. The rate of serious or life-threatening internal bleeding was 1.1 percent in the aspirin group and 2.1 percent in the dual therapy group. The difference was due mostly to a higher number of gastrointestinal bleeds in the dual therapy group. The percentage of brain bleeds in the two groups was not significantly different. Deaths from any cause were also higher in the aspirin-clopidogrel group.

For both groups, stroke recurrence was lower than the investigators had expected. When the SPS3 trial began in 2003, another large trial that tested warfarin vs. aspirin for stroke prevention had just ended. Warfarin is an anticoagulant, another class of drugs that interferes with blood clotting. That trial, called the Warfarin vs. Aspirin Recurrent Stroke Study (WARSS), found that patients with a history of lacunar strokes who took aspirin had an annual stroke recurrence rate of about 7 percent. (Warfarin and aspirin were about equal.)

This reflects a common trend, Dr. Benavente said. "What we see more and more often in stroke prevention trials is a significant decrease in stroke risk, compared to data from 10 years ago. We have better medications now to control stroke risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, and these are clearly having an impact."

In prior studies, antiplatelet drugs including aspirin or clopidogrel alone, or a combination of aspirin and dipyridamole, have been shown to reduce stroke risk in patients with heart disease or prior stroke. In one trial, aspirin combined with clopidogrel was more effective than aspirin alone at reducing stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation, a type of abnormal heart rhythm. However, other trials involving broader stroke populations found no added benefit from combining aspirin and clopidogrel. Therefore, current practice guidelines recommend aspirin alone, clopidogrel alone, or aspirin plus dipyridamole for secondary prevention after most types of stroke. The SPS3 results are consistent with those guidelines.

Researchers continue to investigate whether the clopidogrel-aspirin combination might be beneficial for patients with other types of stroke, such as transient ischemic attack (TIA). This is a type of stroke in which symptoms fade away in less than 24 hours; it is also a warning that a more damaging stroke may be imminent. The Platelet-Oriented Inhibition in New TIA (POINT) trial is testing whether aspirin plus clopidogrel are effective at preventing major strokes when given within 12 hours of a TIA. That trial is also funded by NINDS.

Your online reputation needs to evolve with you | Biznology

The way you feel now about all those photos of you at the beach, in your suit, body-proud, tanned and drinking ? liberation and joy ? may end up making you feel completely different in your near future ? trapped and ashamed. No matter how young you may be, reading these words, you need to start thinking long-game when it comes to your online reputation.

You?re at the mercy of the Panopticon: networked cameras are almost ubiquitous

Your online reputation on Google Search is a culmination of all your separate, discrete (or indiscreet) choices ? sort of like tattoos ? and it?s always easier to not get inked in the first place than it is live with the consequences or go through the pain and expense of having all of your tribal, prison, lower-back, ankle, neck, and face tattoos removed.

Easier said than done

The way you want to be perceived really changes over time, from the feeling of abandon too many of us have in high school to the feeling of reckless abandon that too many people film and photograph over Spring Break in college, to the feeling a righteous indignation too many of us feel all through our 20s, to the feeling of abject panic and regret as all of this brave, courageous, fearless, stupid abandon comes to roost and haunt us on Google Images, YouTube, and Google Search.

Do we ever really know how stupid we are?

When my young friends were in their 20s, they were very happy to be live photo-blogged and I captured them shamelessly: at coffee, at parties, at dinner, and all over. Now that they?ve been through sundry Ivyesque graduate programs, they?ve become way more serious and have all come to me, asking me to curate and remove photos that their names bring up on Google Images. Of course I do ? because I love them; but I probably wouldn?t do the same thing for you.

I, on the other hand, desired to become a US Senator since I was 16, so I limited the true idiocy of my choices ? and, because I grew up Catholic, my natural guilt and self-loathing generally won every fight it had with my whimsical and devil-may-care self. I always told Mark that every bit of spontaneity I have ever exhibited has always been emulated and for effect since all of these spot-and-brave decisions have always been suffered over and considered for months. Sometimes you just gotta say WTF? has never become an essential part of any fiber of my being, though I would love people to think it?s essential to who I am. Nope.

I also came up pre-Internet and pre-social media, so embarrassing me would require way too much work for most people: digging up shameful photos, scanning them, uploading them, and whatnot; finally, my threshold for shame pain is massive because I fancy most slights online to be free publicity of my brand ? so I am surely less delicate ? more durable ? than my tenderfoot friends.

So, what if it?s too late ? I?ve already made myself a complete arse?

You can always email me or explore Reputation.com if you?re freaking out and don?t know what to do. But first, you should check to see if you know who controls any and all of those terrible ?tattoos? that ink up your online reputation, be it unfortunate photos on Google Images. Can you un-tag or report images of you on Facebook and Google+ that you don?t want online? Do you know the folks? Do they like you enough to remove the photo, completely, from everywhere it exists online (because, you know, the Internet can now recognize your face so tagging, titling, and labeling is becoming less essential in the age of Big Data and real-time facial recognition and cross-referencing. You can untag until you?re blue in the face and it might not matter anymore).

So, reach out to your friends and quote the Bible at them: 1 Corinthians 13:11: ?When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.? See if that helps. Who can resist the Word of God as spake by King James? If they don?t love you enough anymore and refuse to remove online things that pain you, consider it Karma ? karmic feedback is a bitch (don?t worry, you still can always email me or explore Reputation.com).

Be kind. Everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

Always remember, when you want folks to help you who don?t have to, being nice always works better than siccing a dog (or in your case, maybe your lawyer) at ?em.

What can I do if my friends resent me and won?t budge?

All you can do, really, is make sure you take it upon yourself to feed the hungry, toothy, maw of Google Search, including video, Picasa, Flickr, Google+, Tumblr, WordPress, WordPress.com, Facebook, Twitter, TwitPic, LinkedIn and your corporate, foundation, and business web pages.

And, if you already have pages populated online, you need to explore all your photo and image ?container? platforms and you need to see if there are ways to either directly change the file name to reflect your name, chris-abraham.jpg, and then you need to explore to see if you?re allowed to intentionally tag each photo: you can do that on Flickr, Facebook, and Google+ for sure ? and there might be others.

If you?re inserting photos into articles or posts that you control, you need to make sure file names reflect your name, preferably with dashes or underscores (as the Internet sometimes gets confused by spaces). And if your image insertion tool ? or you ? know how to add an ALT tag or a title tag to your photo, do so ? but don?t just describe the photo, say something like ?Portrait of Chris Abraham? or ?Official Photo of Chris Abraham? ? Google wants associative and descriptive contextual content ? and you need to do a much better job than everyone else on Google Search in order to become the top results under your name ? better, even, than the folks who are out to mock, embarrass, and shame you.

Google cares about most relevant, yes, but it also prefers the most recent, the most timely, and also the most interconnected and cross-referenced ? as well as content that has the most descriptive and consistent ?meta data:? the following photo is indeed a photo of Chris Abraham, most likely the American one, in his 40s, who lives most of his life in Arlington, VA. That?s all Google really wants and you can be the very best at that because you knows you like you do? Do it!

In conclusion

Most of you were either stupid, sort-sighted, immortal, young, or in different work and a different place when you got all your full-body Yakuza-style, online reputation tattoos. Don?t worry but it does suck. As they say, youth is wasted on the young.

It probably isn?t that bad, really

You?re probably too much of a control freak and you?re the only one who feels a little too powerless ? you?ve been hurt before and are a little sensitive, now aren?t you? While I think you deserve to have your perfect reflection online? as well as everywhere else ? the Internet really isn?t like that. One of the things you might want to do it work on your tolerance, your sense of humor, your level of ?let go, let Google.? Are you really that ashamed of the photo of your bad mustache, your bad haircut, your bad goatee, or that fat period we all suffered through with you.

So, take a second, take a breath, and reconsider your place in the world

Let me really close by saying the thing that makes you the most beautiful are the scars of your life and of your living: your flaws and your humanity. Consider carefully how curated you need your life to be. Re-sculpting your life online is going to be very time-consuming, very resource-intensive, and very expensive.

Good luck and Godspeed!

The Impacts of Inconsistent Pet Restrictions on Base : StubbyDog

The U.S. military forces are among the bravest and most selfless people in our country. They dedicate and risk their lives to protect our citizens and rights. While serving in the military, it?s common to be transferred to varying locations both within the U.S. as well as internationally. Moving is stressful and uprooting your entire life over and over again is difficult. To make matters worse, pet rules vary from one location to the next, limiting how many pets are allowed and prohibiting select breeds and types of dogs. Risking life and comfort for our country is part of military service. For all that our service men and women do for our country, to deny them the familiarity and love of their own pets is not acceptable. Pets are family and should be able to provide comfort and affection to their loving owners no matter where life and military service may take them.

Here, and in many other stories on our site, we share the stories of many military families have been impacted by the inconsistent pet restrictions currently in place:

?I moved off base just to keep my baby. I followed the base?s ?grandfather-in? rule to keep my Staffordshire Bull Terrier on base. This only bought us an extra year and a half, and then they were going to kick us out if I did not give up my dog. No thanks. I will live off base.? ? Erica

?My husband is active duty Navy E4 and has been in for two years. We are currently at New London sub base in Groton, Conn. We now live in base housing here, and they did not have an issue with Cody, our dog. I don?t get why one base would have an issue and the other wouldn?t. [Because of inconsistent pet restrictions] we spent over a year apart.? ? Heather

?I have a Boxer/Lab mix, but the base said he looked like a pit bull, and we were told we had to get our dog?s blood checked to show that he wasn?t a pit bull because they wouldn?t take the veterinarian?s word to be enough. In the meantime, our house was on hold for us, and we signed all the leasing documents and everything. The blood test came back, and our dog was less than 3 percent pit bull, but because he was some part pit bull, we couldn?t keep him and had to sign other papers saying we wouldn?t have him on base. I spent over $500 flying him to California to live with my parents, and then after it was done we went in to get our keys and show them that our dog was now in California. They had given our house away to someone else after we signed a leasing agreement, and they said they didn?t think that we would give up our dog. We had nowhere else to go, and the apartment we were staying in was going up in price, and we couldn?t afford it. They finally found us a house, and it wasn?t fully ready for new move-in condition, but we needed a house by that weekend. So we moved in and got a bad location and stained carpet because they didn?t have time to fix it. I lost my best dog and got a bad place to live. It?s stupid how they choose what dogs can stay. I?ve been bitten twice by the Chihuahua next door, but that?s OK because it?s small.? ? Jessica

?I have a gorgeous pit bull named Willie that a devastated soldier brought to our shelter. He had to give him up due to breed-discriminatory legislation at the base he is transferring to. It was heart wrenching to watch this brave soldier kiss his best friend goodbye with tears running down his face. Something has to be done.? ? Katherine

?When we received a Permanent Change of Station to Germany, we were told at the last minute (literally the day before we left) that they only allowed families to have two pets. We ended up having to give one of our cats to my aunt and uncle before we left. I?m so glad that they were able to take him because I know that he is happy, loved and safe. Seeing this post brought me to tears, I still miss him so much.? ? Jessica

?We adopted an amazing Rottweiler in Virginia seven years ago and had no problems in either Virginia or Connecticut, but when were about to move to Florida we found that she was not allowed in housing (even though the same parent company managed both the Connecticut and Florida housing communities). Being as we have special needs children, I was able to get special paperwork together to have her here as an ESA (Emotional Support Animal), but it took over six months to complete, and thankfully during this time my sister in Massachusetts was able to foster her. I agree that policies need to be standardized across the board. Honestly, I am more scared of my neighbors little yippy dog than I am of my Rottie.? ? Jessica Miller, a Navy spouse stationed in Mayport, Fla.

Family of slain US activist awaits verdict

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Almost a decade after their daughter was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer as she tried to block its path in a Gaza Strip conflict zone, Rachel Corrie's parents are preparing for a judge's ruling in their high-profile civil lawsuit against the military.

They hope Tuesday's court decision will conclude a case that's turned their daughter into a rallying cry for pro-Palestinian activists, taken years of their life and drained their savings.

"We are here with a great deal of anticipation for Tuesday," said Corrie's mother, Cindy, 64, a homemaker and musician from Olympia, Washington. "We are hoping for some accountability here for what happened to Rachel."

Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist, was 23 when she was killed in March 2003 while she and other activists sought to block an Israeli military bulldozer in the Gaza border town of Rafah. The driver has said he didn't see Corrie, and that the death was accidental.

Corrie opposed the Israeli military's demolition of Palestinian homes, part of a campaign designed to halt shooting and mortar attacks against soldiers and Jewish settlers traveling in the densely populated border area. According to the U.N. agency handling Palestinian refugees, the military had left more than 17,000 Gazans homeless in the four years after a Palestinian uprising against Israel erupted in September 2000. The demolitions drew international condemnation at the time.

While several foreign activists were killed or wounded in confrontations with the Israeli military during the last decade, Corrie's case has taken on special meaning for Palestinian activists.

For her supporters, she became a symbol of what they say is Israel's harsh repression of nonviolent protest to occupation. They saw in her a young middle class American who died believing that she was defending the homes of strangers. She was a passionate writer whose works showed how deeply moved she was by the suffering she saw around her.

Corrie's parents published those letters, and artists made a play about her life.

Corrie belonged to the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement, whose activists enter conflict zones and try to interfere with activities of Israel's military. Supporters of Israel argue that Corrie, like thousands of other foreign activists, recklessly chose to risk her life.

"Rachel Corrie was injured as a result of her prohibited action, for which she is solely responsible, due to her considerable negligence and lack of caution," the Justice Ministry said in a statement.

The family's case is the first civil lawsuit of a foreigner harmed by Israel's military to conclude in a full civilian trial. Others have resulted in out-of-court settlements.

Since the Corries went to court in 2005, there have been 15 hearings and testimony from 23 witnesses.

They hope the court will apportion blame to the bulldozer driver and his superiors, who have all been cleared of wrongdoing in a military court.

The Corries are seeking a symbolic $1 in damages, along with compensation for the money they've spent bringing the case to trial.

The Corries said their case underscored how difficult it was for families to pursue justice for loved ones killed by Israeli forces.

Criminal convictions of soldiers, who are tried in military courts, are rare. In one case, an Israeli military court in 2005 convicted a former soldier of manslaughter in the shooting of a British activist, Tom Hurndall.

Israeli rights group B'Tselem said in 304 cases where soldiers killed Palestinians, only nine indictments were filed. Another 27 cases were awaiting a decision of the military advocate general and 14 cases were under investigation.

It has "conveyed a message to commanders and soldiers that there is little chance they will be held accountable," said Sarit Michaeli of B'Tselem. The Israeli military declined to comment.

The Corries said they spent over $200,000 of their own savings to fly in witnesses, attend hearings and translate over 2,000 pages of court transcripts. They were supported by an army of volunteers, including lawyers, translators and media activists.

"We found ourselves in a war of attrition with a state against a family. That's what it feels like," said Rachel's father Craig, 65, a Vietnam war veteran and a retired life insurance specialist.

One of the last photographs of Rachel Corrie shows a blonde woman staring pensively into the distance, her pen poised above her notebook, a gray scarf around her neck. It's often turned into a graffiti painting on walls in Gaza.

She's frozen in time, said her father Craig.

"Just think how she would have grown. She would be 33 years old now. And yet in her mind she stopped growing when she was almost 24. It's a strange sort of thing."

It was that memory that kept them going. "I think Rachel would be proud of us," he said.

Routine screening catches child abuse in ER

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Routinely screening all children seen in the ER for signs of maltreatment seems to have improved child abuse detection in the Netherlands, a new study finds.

The progress suggests that such systematic screening helps catch more cases of child abuse, researchers report in the journal Pediatrics.

But whether the findings could extend to other countries is unclear. And one emergency physician doubted the usefulness in U.S. hospitals.

It's estimated that about one in 30 children in the Netherlands are victims of abuse.

But compared with some other countries, Dutch ER staff have historically been less likely to pick up possible abuse, according to the researchers on the new study, led by Ida J. Korfage of the University Medical Center Rotterdam.

Child abuse is suspected in about 0.2 percent of Dutch children who end up in an ER -- versus 2 percent in Italy, up to 6 percent in the UK, and about 10 percent in the U.S.

So for the new study, Korfage and her colleagues created and tested a standard "checklist" that ER nurses could use to screen for possible child abuse. If a child met any of the checklist "warning signs," the nurse would tell the doctor, who then had the job of investigating further.

The researchers had four ERs adopt the checklist, and gave nurses there training in spotting possible child abuse. Three other hospitals served as a comparison group.

Then, in the middle of the study, the Netherlands passed a law requiring ERs to screen all children for potential child abuse. So over two years, all of the hospitals -- not just the ones given the checklist -- increased their screening rates.

And the screening seemed to boost the chances of catching abuse,

Of children who were screened at any ER, 0.5 percent were considered possible abuse victims. That compared with only 0.1 percent of kids who were not screened.

According to Korfage's team, the findings suggest that a combination of legal requirements and staff training boosts abuse screening rates - and that, in turn, improves child abuse detection. (Korfage did not respond to an email requesting comment.)

UNCLEAR EFFECT IN THE U.S.

"It's great that they found a way to improve child abuse detection, because detection was really low in the Netherlands," said Dr. Michael J. Gerardi, who directs pediatric emergency medicine at Goryeb Children's Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey, and serves on the board of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

"But I don't think this should be interpreted as suggesting it would work in the U.S.," Gerardi said.

In general, staff in U.S. ERs would start with the nature of the child's injuries; if they raised suspicions, the doctor would investigate further, including questioning the caregiver.

Gerardi said he does not believe a standard checklist, done for every child in the ER, is necessary. He thinks the checklist used in this study "raised awareness" of child abuse among Dutch ER staff who'd lacked it.

Child abuse detection is part of the "core curriculum" for emergency physicians in the U.S., Gerardi said. He pointed out that the staffing in Dutch ERs is different; that is, they are not emergency medicine specialists.

Half of the doctors working in ERs in this study were surgeons, while the rest were mostly pediatricians.

In the U.S., states require doctors to report suspected cases of abuse to local child protective services. But Gerardi said he did not think mandatory screening of all kids who arrive in the ER would be necessary or helpful.

"Do we catch all cases of child abuse? No. It's still a problem," Gerardi said.

But, he added, using a standardized checklist is no guarantee, either. "Your answer on the checklist could be wrong."

Gerardi put more stock in the promise of electronic medical records, which can be shared among providers. So even if an abused child with repeat injuries is brought to different hospitals each time, he said, doctors will be better able to "connect the dots."

Los Angeles Educational facilities Welcome Back The Arts

Los Angeles Schools are seeing a gradual improve in arts training as the dual result of a protracted-term program and recent state funding. The Arts for All program was initiated in 2002 as a 10-yr plan to restore arts schooling to the 80 districts of Los Angeles Schools. The challenge focuses on bringing music, dance, drama and the visible arts to Ok-12 faculties within the area. 9 colleges have just signed up for the 2007-2008 school yr, bringing the overall variety of Los Angeles Schools involved up to 27.

Two of the newest individuals are the Lancaster and Palmdale districts of Los Angeles Schools. Each schools completely eradicated their elementary music packages within the final decade on account of finances cuts and increased pressure to perform on state tests. Major cuts first began for Los Angeles Schools with Proposition thirteen in 1978. This California mandate decreased property taxes and district funds, which required all Los Angeles Colleges to scale back or eliminate arts and physical education classes.

Los Angeles Colleges have been happy when the state introduced funding of $500 million for art, music and bodily training classes at first of June. Los Angeles Colleges will use much of these funds for the Arts for All Program. Arts for All is constructed on a five-step process which, whereas proven efficient, costs money. The five steps concerned are:

1. Allocating 5% of a district?s price range to arts training 2. Having a board adopted coverage 3. Creating an implementation plan with a timeline 4. Assigning a district stage arts coordinator 5. Sustaining a student to arts trainer ratio of 400:1

Los Angeles Schools pays for a program expert to information dad and mom, staff and neighborhood members in the creation of their implementation plan. The Lancaster district has a further grant of $260,000 for its art and music programs.

Los Angeles Schools welcome the increased funding as a protracted overdue measure. Many educators in the Los Angeles Schools have lamented the loss of the arts as dangerous to pupil development. Whereas lots of the cuts to arts education end result from diverting funds to cowl tutorial subjects wanted to cross state assessments, lecturers argue that artwork really enhances learning, permits youngsters to make connections between subjects, and gives an a lot needed steadiness to education.

Like the remainder of the country?s urban districts Los Angeles Colleges are trying to satisfy the 2014 No Youngster Left Behind requirement that mandates proficiency on state tests by all students regardless of developmental delays or language barriers. Diverting funding away from the humanities has put Los Angeles Faculties in a scenario where kids as young as third grade are shedding recess, bodily exercise and a basic arts background in a frenzied scramble to fulfill rising national standards.

Nevins Small Business Pledge ? small business owners pledging to create a new job the day Romney swears in

Home - by BigFurHat - August 26, 2012 - 09:00 America/New_York - 12 Comments

I?m 41

Russell Nevins ? I am Chief of Surgery at one of the largest hospitals in Las Vegas and lucky enough to be a small business owner. I am by no means independently wealthy, nor have any desire to pad a Swiss bank account on the back of anyone, even ?the middle class?.

The? introduction is based on a letter I sent to Bill O?Reilly. This explains the purpose of this web site.

I believe I can help Romney get elected. I call it the ?Nevins Small Business Pledge?. I, as a small business owner, am pledging to create a new job the day Romney swears in. I can do this from my taxes I won?t have to pay if Obama is elected again.

image

I believe we can get 100,000 plus other small businesses to do the same in the next 60 days.

Simplifying genetic codes to look back in time

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers show simpler versions of the universal genetic code can still function in protein synthesis. In addition to understanding early primordial organisms, the research could lead to applications preventing non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers at the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code, created by knocking out certain amino acids, can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis [1].

The researchers conducted experiments altering the genetic code in a test tube. They removed the amino acid tryptophan and discovered that the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There will be also numerous applications for simplified genetic strains in laboratory experiments, which could potentially prevent non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Background and future developments

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers of the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code -- created by knocking out certain amino acids -- can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis. The researchers conducted cell-free experiments altering the genetic code.

All current life forms on Earth have 20 amino acids in their genetic code. However, scientists believe that this was not always the case, and that organisms evolved from simpler genetic codes with fewer amino acids. Amino acids are linked in accordance with codons -- a 3-letter combination of the four base nucleotides (G, A, T and C) in a genetic code. There are 64 possible codons, and so most amino acids are produced by several different codons, except for tryptophan and methionine, which are generated by just one codon each. Tryptophan is thought to be the most recent amino acid to become part of the universal genetic code.

Kiga and his team took the codon for tryptophan, and reassigned it to code for the amino acid alanine instead. They discovered the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before. The researchers also reassigned another codon originally for the amino acid cysteine and replaced it with serine. This simplified code without cysteine was able to synthesize an active enzyme.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There are also numerous applications for simplified genetic codes in laboratory experiments and clinical trials.

Before emergence of the current universal genetic code, primitive organisms that may have used only 19 amino acids could benefit from horizontal gene transfer, where cells transfer genetic material between one another. This is a key method used by bacteria to develop resistance to drugs. An organism with the current universal genetic code for 20 amino acids would have competitive advantages in its ability to synthesize proteins, but could not engage in genetic transfer with the rest of the population. Only when a suitably large gene pool of organisms with 20 amino acids is available could horizontal transfer occur between these life forms and they could then thrive. This implies that organisms with a simpler genetic code could be used as a barrier in laboratory experiments, preventing new genetically modified strains from escaping to the natural world.
