Senate panel OKs Obama choice for US commander

(AP) ? The Senate Armed Services Committee has approved President Barack Obama's choice to be the top commander in Afghanistan.

By voice vote Thursday, the panel cleared the way for the full Senate to vote on Gen. Joseph Dunford, the assistant commandant of the Marine Corps who had directed combat forces in Iraq.

Dunford would replace Gen. John Allen, the current commander in Afghanistan who has been nominated to take charge in Europe.

Allen's nomination is suddenly on hold as he's ensnared in the sex scandal that had led to the resignation of CIA director David Petraeus.

HTC Windows Phone 8X (Verizon Wireless)

Form or function? The HTC 8X is the classiest and best-looking of the three Windows Phone 8 devices headed to Verizon Wireless. Verizon will also offer less expensive and more flexible options, so you're paying extra for style here. But the 8X will do an especially good job satisfying media-centric smartphone?users who enjoy music and video.

Verizon's model of the HTC 8X looks exactly like the?AT&T?and?T-Mobile?models, which we've already reviewed. I'll focus here on Verizon-specific software and comparing the phone to Verizon's two other Windows Phones, the Nokia Lumia 822 and the mysterious, upcoming Samsung Ativ Odyssey.

Physical Features and Call Quality
The 8X is definitely going to be the best-looking of the three phones. It's noticeably slimmer, but a little taller than the Nokia 822, and it's made from more clearly premium materials; the 8X's soft-touch polycarbonate beats the 822's glossy plastic any day. We haven't had hands-on time with the upcoming Ativ Odyssey, but leaks have shown it to look rather like a Samsung Galaxy S III. The 8X's materials would beat that one, too. And with its nicely tapered form, the 8X fits very easily into a palm. The 8X also has wireless charging built in, although I'm still convinced that's a silly gimmick as it isn't actually wireless?the charger still needs to be plugged into the wall.

Note: The slideshow below shows the AT&T 8X, but the Verizon model is identical other than the carrier logo.

The 8X's screen is higher resolution, but dimmer and duller than the 822's punchy AMOLED panel. That means everything can look a little washed out on the 8X, but you see significantly more of a Web page on the 8X's 1280-by-720 display than on the 822's 800-by-480 screen. If the Ativ Odyssey is based on Samsung's Ativ S, it will have a 4.8-inch 1280-by-720 AMOLED display, which could be the best of both worlds.

What's really missing from the 8X is under the hood. The Nokia Lumia 822 has both a memory card slot and a removable battery; the 8X has neither, meaning you must rely on the 14.56GB of built-in storage.?

Reception and Internet speeds are about on par with the 822. Verizon speeds in our neighborhood really degrade in bad weather, so we should all overlook the 2-4Mbps speeds I was getting on the SpeedTest app with both phones. Rather, the important point is that the two phones pretty regularly traded places as to who led on speed.

Voice quality is a little better than on the 822, especially in noisy areas. The 822's aggressive noise cancellation tends to cut out more of your voice through its microphone than on the 8X, so callers on the other end hear a fuller tone from 8X calls. Volume on the speakerphone and earpiece are fine, if not terribly loud. There's no sidetone, the echo of your own voice in your ear, which is always a matter of taste.?

Voice dialing worked fine with a Plantronics Voyager Legend headset, but as we've seen before, Windows Phone's voice commands are more limited than on Apple and Android phones, as Windows Phone lacks natural language commands.

The 8X is a world phone, able to hit 3G speeds on GSM and UMTS 850/900/1800/1900/2100 MHz networks, and Verizon finally has reasonable international roaming plans. I was also happy to find that the 8X can do simultaneous voice and data if it's connected to LTE. Battery life was excellent, with 10 hours, 10 minutes of talk time?more than I got on the AT&T and T-Mobile units.

Apps and Multimedia
For a full perspective on Windows Phone 8, read our review of the OS and our review of the AT&T Windows Phone 8X. This version of the 8X shares the same 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor as all of the other Windows Phone 8 devices we've seen, and performance is similar. Note that the lower-resolution Windows Phones such as the Lumia 822 feel slightly faster because they're pushing fewer pixels on the screen.

Carriers are allowed to add a half-dozen apps to Windows Phones, and Verizon threw in its usual bunch. But one app stands out, and it's a major reason to get a Verizon Windows Phone: Data Sense.

Data Sense is a data monitoring app which shows you how much data you've used and warns you when you get close to your monthly limit. You can break down data usage by app and see a map of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots.

That's useful, but it's also just the start. Microsoft uses Data Sense to compress data server-side so you use less of it, and has made a deal with DeviceScape to get your Windows Phone to automatically hook up to public hotspots when you're out and about. While you can get those features with the Onavo Extend and DataSaver apps on Android, it's more convenient and less of a battery drain to have the feature built into the OS. The data saving feature is out now; the automatic hotspot attachment will come next year.

Windows Phone still lacks built-in, voice-guided navigation, which is something that Nokia has been able to build on with its own Nokia Drive. The 8X almost, but not quite, evens the score by including VZ Navigator. VZ Navigator offers voice-guided driving directions, but it doesn't offer an option for transit directions. VZ Navigator also had serious trouble getting a GPS lock indoors, where the built-in Bing Maps was able to use Wi-Fi to find its location.

HTC's key improvement comes with music and video playback: Beats Audio and the 8X's 2.55v headphone amp. Combined with the higher-resolution screen, that makes for movies with sharper video and much deeper, more resonant sound than on the Lumia 822. Music, meanwhile, has the brain-thumping bass that we've come to expect from Beats.

Otherwise, camera performance is the same as on the AT&T 8X, with a decent 8-megapixel camera that records 1080p video. There are a few things to note here: the 2.1-megapixel front camera has a very wide field of view, which is great for taking group shots, but low-light photos can get blurry. Also, the video camera keeps things bright in low light by reducing the frame rate, which makes for clearer but jerkier videos than on Nokia phones, which keep the frame rate high but record dimmer images.

Conclusions
At $199, the Windows Phone 8X costs $100 more than the Nokia Lumia 822. You gain screen resolution, better sound, and a higher-quality body; you lose the memory card slot, removable battery, and some screen brightness. I'd pick the 8X myself, because I love the size and shape of this phone, but I can see both arguments. If size isn't an issue for you, you might also want to wait for the larger Samsung Ativ Odyssey, which will bring a larger screen, albeit in a less premium-feeling body.

Against Verizon's other top phones, well, it comes down to whether you're ready to jump to Windows Phone 8. The 8X's top competitors are the best-selling Samsung Galaxy S III, the Apple iPhone 5, and the HTC Droid DNA, and they're all fearsome opponents, with more apps and even better features?in the DNA's case, a super-high-res screen, and in the iPhone's case a better camera, for instance.

Ultimately, you'll buy the 8X if you find Windows Phone cuddly, entertaining and fun. If you use Sharepoint at work, XBox Live at home, or you just like the look of the customized home-screen tiles, you'll be happy here.?

Google acquires coupon-focused Incentive Targeting for undisclosed sum

Google acquires couponfocused Incentive Targeting for undisclosed sum

Google is no stranger to the business of discounts and special offers, but it looks like it's decided to reach outside the company to further bolster its offerings. The company confirmed today that it has acquired the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based marketing firm Incentive Targeting for an undisclosed sum. While not offering too much in the way of specifics, Google said in a statement that "we look forward to working with Incentive Targeting in our ongoing efforts to help consumers save time and money and enable retailers deliver relevant discounts to the right customers." For its part, Incentive Targeting has said that it "set out to do for retail couponing what Google had done for online advertising: make it simple, relevant, measurable, and effective," and to that end it has developed a variety of tools for retailers and manufacturers alike, all designed to deliver coupons and discounts in a more targeting manner. You can find the company's full statement on its website.

'Casablanca' piano coming to NYC auction

NEW YORK (AP) ? The piano used for the song "As Times Goes By" in the classic 1942 film "Casablanca" is getting another turn at fame.

The instrument is going up for sale at Sotheby's in New York on Dec. 14, and the auction house estimates it'll fetch up to $1.2 million.

It's being offered by a Japanese collector on the film's 70th anniversary.

The collector purchased the movie prop at a Sotheby's auction in 1988 for $154,000.

Humphrey Bogart played Rick Blaine in the Oscar-winning World War II love story, opposite Ingrid Bergman's character, Ilsa Lund.

In a famous flashback scene, Rick and Ilsa lean on the piano at a Paris bistro. Sam, played by Dooley Wilson, plays and sings.

They toast as Rick says: "Here's looking at you, kid."

Scientists See Advances in Deep Learning, a Part of Artificial Intelligence

Hao Zhang/The New York Times

A voice recognition program translated a speech given by Richard F. Rashid, Microsoft?s top scientist, into Mandarin Chinese.

Using an artificial intelligence technique inspired by theories about how the brain recognizes patterns, technology companies are reporting startling gains in fields as diverse as computer vision, speech recognition and the identification of promising new molecules for designing drugs.

The advances have led to widespread enthusiasm among researchers who design software to perform human activities like seeing, listening and thinking. They offer the promise of machines that converse with humans and perform tasks like driving cars and working in factories, raising the specter of automated robots that could replace human workers.

The technology, called deep learning, has already been put to use in services like Apple?s Siri virtual personal assistant, which is based on Nuance Communications? speech recognition service, and in Google?s Street View, which uses machine vision to identify specific addresses.

But what is new in recent months is the growing speed and accuracy of deep-learning programs, often called artificial neural networks or just ?neural nets? for their resemblance to the neural connections in the brain.

?There has been a number of stunning new results with deep-learning methods,? said Yann LeCun, a computer scientist at New York University who did pioneering research in handwriting recognition at Bell Laboratories. ?The kind of jump we are seeing in the accuracy of these systems is very rare indeed.?

Artificial intelligence researchers are acutely aware of the dangers of being overly optimistic. Their field has long been plagued by outbursts of misplaced enthusiasm followed by equally striking declines.

In the 1960s, some computer scientists believed that a workable artificial intelligence system was just 10 years away. In the 1980s, a wave of commercial start-ups collapsed, leading to what some people called the ?A.I. winter.?

But recent achievements have impressed a wide spectrum of computer experts. In October, for example, a team of graduate students studying with the University of Toronto computer scientist Geoffrey E. Hinton won the top prize in a contest sponsored by Merck to design software to help find molecules that might lead to new drugs.

From a data set describing the chemical structure of thousands of different molecules, they used deep-learning software to determine which molecule was most likely to be an effective drug agent.

The achievement was particularly impressive because the team decided to enter the contest at the last minute and designed its software with no specific knowledge about how the molecules bind to their targets. The students were also working with a relatively small set of data; neural nets typically perform well only with very large ones.

?This is a really breathtaking result because it is the first time that deep learning won, and more significantly it won on a data set that it wouldn?t have been expected to win at,? said Anthony Goldbloom, chief executive and founder of Kaggle, a company that organizes data science competitions, including the Merck contest.

Advances in pattern recognition hold implications not just for drug development but for an array of applications, including marketing and law enforcement. With greater accuracy, for example, marketers can comb large databases of consumer behavior to get more precise information on buying habits. And improvements in facial recognition are likely to make surveillance technology cheaper and more commonplace.

Artificial neural networks, an idea going back to the 1950s, seek to mimic the way the brain absorbs information and learns from it. In recent decades, Dr. Hinton, 64 (a great-great-grandson of the 19th-century mathematician George Boole, whose work in logic is the foundation for modern digital computers), has pioneered powerful new techniques for helping the artificial networks recognize patterns.

Modern artificial neural networks are composed of an array of software components, divided into inputs, hidden layers and outputs. The arrays can be ?trained? by repeated exposures to recognize patterns like images or sounds.

These techniques, aided by the growing speed and power of modern computers, have led to rapid improvements in speech recognition, drug discovery and computer vision.

Deep-learning systems have recently outperformed humans in certain limited recognition tests.

Last year, for example, a program created by scientists at the Swiss A.?I. Lab at the University of Lugano won a pattern recognition contest by outperforming both competing software systems and a human expert in identifying images in a database of German traffic signs.

The winning program accurately identified 99.46 percent of the images in a set of 50,000; the top score in a group of 32 human participants was 99.22 percent, and the average for the humans was 98.84 percent.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: November 26, 2012

An earlier version of this article misstated the number of molecules analyzed in a contest sponsored by Merck and won by students using deep-learning software. Contestants analyzed thousands of potential molecules, not 15. (There were 15 data files, each containing thousands of molecules.)

More Facebook friends means more stress, says report

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A large number of friends on Facebook may appear impressive but, according to a new report, the more social circles a person is linked to online the more likely social media will be a source of stress.

A report from the University of Edinburgh Business School has found that the more groups of people in someone's Facebook friends, the greater potential to cause offense. In particular, adding employers or parents resulted in the greatest increase in anxiety.

Stress arises when a user presents a version of themself on Facebook that is unacceptable to some of their online 'friends', such as posts displaying behavior such as swearing, recklessness, drinking and smoking.

As older people join the site, this has become an increasing problem as their expectations may be very different from those of younger users.

Some 55 per cent of parents follow their children on Facebook. Likewise, more than half of employers claim not to have hired someone based on their Facebook page.

Researchers found that on average people are Facebook friends with seven different social circles. The most common group was friends known offline (97 per cent added them as friends online), followed by extended family (81 per cent), siblings (80 per cent), friends of friends (69 per cent), and colleagues (65 per cent).

The report also discovered that more people are Facebook friends with their former partners than with their current relationship partner. Only 56 per cent of users were friends with their boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse online, compared with 64 per cent of exes.

The report surveyed more than 300 people on Facebook, mostly students, with an average age of 21.

It also discovered that only one third use the listing privacy setting on their Facebook profile, which can be used to control the information seen by different types of friends.

Ben Marder, author of the report and early career fellow in marketing at the Business School, said: "Facebook used to be like a great party for all your friends where you can dance, drink and flirt. But now with your Mum, Dad and boss there the party becomes an anxious event full of potential social landmines."

PREPARING FOR A LESS WASTEFUL, LESS STRESSFUL ...

WASTE (of money, time, resources) & STRESS during the holidays.

This has been heavy on my mind for the last several Christmases. So many years of buying junk just to have something to give someone, or to pad the amount of gifts per child to increase the Christmas morning ?MAGIC FACTOR?. It has always caused me to pause and regret. More and more as each Christmas morning passes, as I survey the damage and pick up the trash?and realize how fast it goes and how little it means.

I don?t want gifts given out of obligation, and I don?t want a throwaway gift. I don?t want to be just another name on someone?s shopping list either, adding to their stress and taking money out of their bank account. I also know that it isn?t possible or even practical to expect a meaningful, thoughtful gift EVERY YEAR. That?s okay, I?m content without getting anything. All the more incredible when a gift is placed on my lap. Knowing it meant something to the person giving it.

Watch this video that Patagonia sent out today and think about how you think about gifts and giving. Think about what really matters for your family. Think about what the IDEA of gifts really means, and see if you can find a way to recreate that in other ways throughout the holiday.

?

Common Threads Initiative from Patagonia on Vimeo.

SOME EXPERIMENTS THAT MIGHT HELP:

Talk to your family about this subject, ask for support.

Gently set a present limit for extended family members who are buying for your children. This takes pressure off!

?We will be citizens and ambassadors, each with a destiny of our own, but with a common pledge to honor life, and nature.?

Name swap with big groups. Each person gets one gift per person, thus creating more time and energy to purchase thoughtfully.

Plan a family talent show for Christmas morning after the gifts are opened.

Dim the lights, light the candles, and crank the Christmas music. Put on socks and slide around the kitchen (or wood) floor, sharing your best dance moves as you make breakfast after the presents are opened.

White elephant parties. This can include gag gifts of real gifts. Especially fun when alcohol and obnoxious people are involved.

Shop for gifts second hand. A special trinket or vintage treasure from the heart.

?This is something we can do. This is something we are called to do. And if we are quiet we will surely hear it.?

Host a ?favorites party?. Each person brings multiple amounts of ONE of their favorite things, under a certain dollar amount. Everyone at the party shares, you go home with some meaningful swag.

Time spent together throughout the month in what I call ?spontaneous delight?. Usually means you are doing something new or something old with a fresh twist. Can be something as simple as a new board game, just take it off the table and onto a picnic blanket outside (or inside in front of the fire). Ask the kids to prepare ?fancy snacks?.

Take more care to find things with meaning through the year, and not just in a mad rush at the big red store at the last minute.

Ask your spouse to write you a letter and place it in your stocking Christmas Eve. Do the same for him or her.

?Living is not buying. To be a citizen of the earth is to put one?s brief life to the use of one?s dearest gifts.?

If you know someone who has a need for a big ticket item, organize a donation fund and gift the person with cash to go towards their purchase. Put the cash in a fun container, and give it in a fun way. (Put a bunch of $1 bills in a huge jar, send them on a treasure hunt.)

For people in your life with children, give them the gift of your TIME, and set up a day (or weekend) to babysit for them. (Trust me, this is better than ANY gift certificate to ANY store.)

In creative friends/family circles, host an entirely handmade holiday. (My friend Emily is involved in a handmade holiday online workshop with tutorials for holiday decorations, ornaments, and other goodies)

Make lucky bags.

Take your family on a secret mission like this or this from Andrea at Hula Seventy. It will show them what it feels like to give non material items to others.

Give the gift of your own must haves. Think of the things in your life that you use every day. Is there anything you just couldn?t live without? This could be ANYTHING: a super plush towel, the perfect wallet, or an AMAZING ice cream scoop. If you love it, it will be something that ANYONE on your list would love to have. You can give everyone (or small groups of people) the same thing! This does two things ? eliminates stress and offers them something on your ?best of? list. Label the tag and let them know why it is one of your must haves.

?Gives nature a chance to rest, and time to heal.?

Host a stocking stuffer swap with other creative friends. (organize a group of friends, tally the number of children, set the dollar amount, every adult chooses a single item to make for that number of children. Share and you receive an eclectic mix of things to fill up the stockings Christmas morning.

Plan advent activities, like our Bernard The Christmas Elf.

If you are in a service industry (photography, landscaping, sewing, carpentry, cooking, massage, graphic design?), gift that service to someone on your list on a smaller scale than your average job. Or, go for the gusto and remodel their entire kitchen. ;)

And, from the Patagonia video: reduce what you buy, repair what you can, reuse what you no longer need, recycle what?s worn out.

?PURSUE NOT WHAT WE VAGUELY WANT, BUT WHAT WE DEEPLY NEED.?

Most of all, deep breaths, we can do this again, and I wish you ALL a sweet and simple holiday.

-Tara

PS : I would love to keep the ideas coming in the comment section. If you have anything to add, please share!

More than 100 killed in Bangladesh factory fire

Hasan Raza / AP

Bangladeshi firefighters battle a fire at a garment factory in the Savar neighborhood in Dhaka, Bangladesh, late Saturday.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 3:25 p.m. ET: DHAKA, Bangladesh -- At least 112 people were killed in a fire that raced through a multi-story garment factory just outside of Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, an official said Sunday.

The blaze broke out late Saturday at the eight-story factory operated by Tazreen Fashions Ltd., a subsidiary of the Tuba Group, which supplies Walmart and other major retailers in the U.S. and Europe.?

By Sunday morning, firefighters had recovered 100 bodies, fire department Operations Director Maj. Mohammad Mahbub told The Associated Press. He said another 12 people who had suffered injuries after jumping from the building to escape the fire later died at hospitals. The death toll could rise as the search for victims was continuing, he said.?

Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed in the fire. The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear, and authorities have ordered an investigation.?

Army soldiers and paramilitary border guards were deployed to help police keep the situation under control as thousands of onlookers and anxious relatives of the factory workers gathered at the scene, Mahbub said. He would not say how many people were still missing.?

Working conditions at Bangladeshi factories are notoriously poor, with little enforcement of safety laws, and overcrowding and locked fire doors are common. The cause of this fire was not immediately known.?

Tazreen was given a "high risk" safety rating after May 16, 2011, audit conducted by an ethical sourcing assessor for Wal-Mart, according to a document posted on the Tuba Group's website. It did not specify the conditions or violations that led to the rating.?

A spokesman for Wal-Mart said online documents indicating that the factory received an orange or "high risk" assessment after the May 2011 inspection and a yellow or "medium risk" report after an inspection in August 2011 appeared to pertain to the factory where the fire occurred.?

The August 2011 letter said Wal-Mart would conduct another inspection within one year. Spokesman Kevin Gardner said it was not clear if that inspection had been conducted, or if the factory was still making products for Wal-Mart.?

If a factory is rated "orange" three times in a two-year period, Wal-Mart won't place any orders for one year. The May 2011 report was the first orange rating for the factory.?

There was no indication whether the violations had been fixed since the May inspection. Neither Tazreen's owner nor Tuba Group officials could be reached for comment.?

The Tuba Group is a major Bangladeshi garment exporter whose clients include Walmart, Carrefour and IKEA, according to its website. Its factories export garments to the U.S., Germany, France, Italy and The Netherlands, among other countries. The Tazreen factory, opened in 2009 and employing about 1,700 people, makes polo shirts, fleece jackets and T-shirts.?

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the United States and Europe.?

In its 2012 Global Responsibility report, Walmart said that "fire safety continues to be a key focus for brands and retailers sourcing from Bangladesh." Walmart said it ceased working with 49 factories in Bangladesh in 2011 due to fire safety issues, and was working with its supplier factories to phase out production from buildings deemed high risk.?

At the factory scene, relatives of the workers were frantically looking for their loved ones. Sabina Yasmine said she saw the body of her daughter-in-law, who died in the fire, but had no trace of her son, who also worked at the factory.?

"Oh, Allah, where's my soul? Where's my son?" wailed Yasmine, who works at another factory in the area. "I want the factory owner to be hanged. For him, many have died, many have gone."

Mahbub said firefighters recovered 69 bodies from the second floor of the factory alone. He said most of the victims had been trapped inside the factory, located just outside of Dhaka, with no emergency exits leading outside the building.?

Many workers who had taken shelter on the roof of the factory were rescued, but firefighters were unable to save those who were trapped inside, Mahbub said.?

He said the fire broke out on the ground floor, which was used as a warehouse, and spread quickly to the upper floors.?

"The factory had three staircases, and all of them were down through the ground floor," Mahbub said. "So the workers could not come out when the fire engulfed the building."?

"Had there been at least one emergency exit through outside the factory, the casualties would have been much lower," he said.?

Many of the victims were burned beyond recognition. The recovered bodies were kept in rows on the premise of a nearby school.?

Meanwhile, many of the bodies were handed over to families but at least 60 bodies remained unidentified till late Sunday, said police official Moshiuddoula, who uses one name. The unclaimed bodies were later taken to Dhaka Medical College where the corpses will be kept until Monday morning for identification.?

Otherwise, the bodies will be handed over to a charity organization, Anjuman-e-Mufidul Islam, for burial, said local chief government administrator Sheikh Yusuf Harun. The charity group is a voluntary organization which buries unclaimed bodies.?

By late Sunday, firefighters had concluded their search and left the scene, the fire department's control room duty officer Bhajan Sarker told The Associated Press by phone.?

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock at the loss of so many lives in the blaze and asked authorities to conduct thorough search-and-rescue operations.?

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said it would stand by the victims' families.?

Separately, a flyover under construction fell onto a busy market, leaving at least 14 people dead including three construction workers in southeastern city of Chittagong, an official said Sunday.?

Local fire official Abdul Mannan said the concrete structure collapsed on Saturday night, and authorities recovered the bodies by Sunday morning from under the debris in the second-largest city after Dhaka.?

Afghan police: Student killed in university clash

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Sunni and Shiite students clashed at Kabul University on a Shiite holy day Saturday, and Afghan authorities say that one person was killed.

Gen. Mohammad Zahir, director of the criminal investigation division, said police were trying to assess why the fight that broke out in the afternoon, killing one student and wounding six others.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene said Shia and Sunni students started fighting and by evening, several hundred more people joined the melee, fist-fighting and throwing stones at each other. He said eyewitnesses at the scene said the clash was related to Ashoura, the commemoration of the 7th century death of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson.

Afghan leaders went to the site to try to calm the crowd. Abdul Azim Nurbakhsh, a spokesman for the Ministry of Higher Education, said late Saturday that classes at the university had been canceled for the next 10 days. Damage was reported to buildings at the university.

Other gatherings marking Ashoura in the Afghan capital were peaceful, but last year, a suicide bomber on foot struck worshippers at a Shiite shrine in Kabul, killing at least 80 people. Some Sunni extremists consider Shiite ceremonies to be heretical.

Separately, NATO said a service member with the international military coalition was killed Saturday in an insurgent attack in the south.

No other information was disclosed.

So far this year, 379 NATO service members have died in Afghanistan.

Former Russian Defence Ministry official charged with fraud

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A former bureaucrat was charged with fraud on Friday in a $100 million embezzlement case that has cost the defense minister his job and shone a spotlight on corruption in President Vladimir Putin's administration.

Yevgeniya Vasilyeva, who had valuable paintings, rare antiques and more than 100 expensive rings seized in an early morning raid on her central Moscow apartment last month, was charged with large-scale fraud.

Vasilyeva, 33, oversaw defense ministry property at a time when one of its firms allegedly sold lucrative properties to insider companies at a loss of at least 3 billion roubles ($96 million).

"Vasilyeva, along with others, participated in the embezzlement of property of subsidiaries of the holding Oboronservis," said federal Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin.

Vasilyeva, who was photographed in a silver sequined dress with former Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, was put under house arrest by a Moscow court and made to wear a tracking device.

Though he has not come under investigation himself, Putin fired Serdyukov on November 6, shortly after the start of the probe. Putin won a third term in office in March.

Vasilyeva has not spoken publicly about the allegations. Serdyukov said in a statement last month that any comments on the case represented only "a possible scenario."

Analysts say Serdyukov fell foul of influential groups within the Kremlin and had crossed his powerful father-in-law.

Investigators said that on Thursday they had raided 18 cottages in a community outside Moscow which belonged to Russia's national tax service and where Serdyukov - a former tax service chief - had stayed for some time.

RIA reported two others have been arrested in the investigation.

Russia's Defence Ministry channels billions of dollars every year through the country's arms industry, the world's second-largest defense exporter.

A military prosecutor last year said one fifth of the military budget is stolen. ($1 = 31.1672 Russian roubles)

Early start to Black Friday shopping frenzy

NEW YORK/BLOOMINGTON, Minnesota (Reuters) - The U.S. shopping frenzy known as "Black Friday" kicked off at a more civilized hour, with shoppers welcoming decisions by retailers such as Target Corp and Toys R Us Inc to move their openings to Thursday night.

They also seemed to show little concern that the U.S. economy could be pushed over a "fiscal cliff," if a combination of tax hikes and spending cuts take effect in January. Economists worry that unless U.S. President Barack Obama and Congress don't agree on a plan, the economy could fall into another recession.

The National Retail Federation expects sales during the holiday season to grow 4.1 percent this year, not as strong as last year.

"I think spending is better for the economy. I think you should spend. If you save all your money that will only make it worse," said Saiful Islam, 21, a New York accounting student who stood in line at Best Buy to purchase a television, a laptop and a PlayStation. "The line is bad, but the deals are good."

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, two-thirds of shoppers were planning to spend the same amount of money as last year or were unsure about spending plans, while 21 percent intended to spend less, and 11 percent planned to spend more.

"I definitely have more money this year," said Amy Balser, 26, at the head of the line outside the Best Buy store in the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. "I definitely don't think (the economy) has bounced back anywhere near as much as it needs to, but I see some improvement," she said.

STARTING EARLY

Across the country, store lines were long - in the hundreds or more in many places - though the move toward earlier opening hours appeared to have helped.

While the shift was denounced by store employees and traditionalists because it pulled people away from families on the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, many shoppers welcomed the chance to shop before midnight or in the early morning hours.

"I think it's better earlier. People are crazier later at midnight," said Renee Ruhl, 52, a hotel worker, at a Target store in Orlando, Florida, where she was already heading to her car with an air hockey game in her shopping cart 2-1/2 hours before the chain opened last year.

Others were not as happy with an earlier Black Friday.

A petition asking Target to "save Thanksgiving" had 371,606 supporters as of Thursday afternoon.

Some workers used the day to send a message.

OUR Walmart - a coalition of current and former Wal-Mart staff seeking better wages, benefits and working conditions - has staged months of protests outside stores and targeted "Black Friday" for action across the country.

HIGH STAKES

The stakes are high for U.S. retailers, who can earn more than one-third of their annual sales during the holiday season, which generally starts with Black Friday.

The National Retail Federation said 147 million people would shop Friday through Sunday, when deals are at their most eye-catching - down from 152 million the same weekend last year.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc's U.S. discount stores, which have been open on Thanksgiving since 1988, offered some "Black Friday" deals at 8 p.m. on Thursday and special deals on certain electronics, like Apple Inc iPads, at 10 p.m.

The earlier hours lured people who had not braved the crowds before on Black Friday, said Jason Buechel, a senior executive in the retail practice of consultancy Accenture, in observing mall activity.

Retailers also made things more orderly.

"There's no stress, no bustling, no people busting down doors," said Richard Stargill, a 43-year-old construction worker from New York, referring to incidents such as the 2008 death of a Walmart worker, trampled by a mob of shoppers.

For Edward Segura, 50, at a Target in Tucson, Arizona, with his wife Belinda, 44, and their daughter, the earlier hours were a blessing.

"We'll shop tonight and tomorrow is freed up for enjoyment. I get to play golf and we're going to a football game later," said Segura. "My wife thinks of this as the Super Bowl of shopping, but I'd rather do something else."

Like many Black Friday shoppers, Segura was looking at televisions. But electronics were not the only hot sellers.

At Macy's in Herald Square in Manhattan, the line at the Estee Lauder counter was four deep shortly after its midnight opening. The cosmetics department's "morning specials" included free high-definition headphones with any fragrance purchase of $75 or more, and a set of six eye shadows for $10.

At the Target on Elston Avenue on Chicago's Northwest side - known as one of the highest-volume stores in the chain - the $25 Dirt Devil vacuum that normally goes for $39.99 was sold out, though there were still several large televisions available. Items such as towels for $2, blankets, kids' slippers and pajamas were hot sellers.

At 2 a.m. CST (0800 GMT), Mall of America was poised to beat the record number of shoppers - 217,000 - that came on the same day last year, according to mall spokesman Dan Jasper.

The day is also a test for retailers shifting strategies, like J. C. Penney Co Inc, which has been suffering from plunging sales as it moves away from coupons toward lower pricing and specialized boutiques within stores.

Amina Kebbeh, 18, of the Bronx, New York, was on line for the 6 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT) opening of Penney's Manhattan store. Others stood with her, though the line was relatively tame, compared to larger stores and those that opened earlier.

"If they remove the coupons, no one is eager to come," she said.

Failed real estate developer email marketing conversion flow and ...

I usually do not have the time or inclination to blog about really, really bad examples of direct and digital marketing. But this one from a real estate developer is just too bad to pass up. ?Have a look.?

Your time is precious so let?s get right to it. Below I have summarized the components of this particular real estate property campaign, I have inserted screen shots of the email as well as the landing page, and finally I share with you a few thoughts on how to improve this real estate marketing campaign. No time to read now? Get the newsletter here

What happened was this;
1) I received a solo promotional email from AMEinfo (yes, they too spam-a-lot)
2) The email contained one big image, which eventually downloaded to my inbox
3) Clicking on the email took me to a landing page
4) Seeing the landing page inspired me to write this post.

You can see my video commentary here?

In my opinion the campaign is a complete waste of money. The really sad news is that countless marketing campaigns similar to this one are executed every day. But the good news is that it is easy to get it right ? if only people would use commonsense and think outside in and be more aware of their conversion flow.

Here is the image I received in the email: (you can click on it to see the landing page)
Real estate marketing example not to do

It looks pretty good, doesn?t it? Scroll down to see my quick comments on why this fails no matter how good it looks.

And here is the landing page (scroll up to see the email piece again, and then scroll down to here immediately after. Now tell me what is wrong)?

not how to create a winning real estate property marketing landing page

?

Do you see what happened there? What would you do to improve this campaign? Think about it. And now read my The Good, The Bad and the really Ugly comments

You can see my video commentary here?

The Good:
If the image is in fact downloaded and renders properly, it does look good and the information is easy to digest. But that?s where the goodies stop. But as you may know, using just a full image in an email is usually not the best tactic. Get the 360 Degree Dialogue Brief to learn more about email marketing and other digital marketing techniques.

The Bad:
I do not know whom this email was sent to, but I assume it has been blasted to all subscribers of AMEinfo. I am certainly not in the audience for buying property in Dubai. In fact, I live a 6 hour plane ride away from Dubai. I suspect the majority of the recipients aren?t even in the target group. Sadly in the MEA region we see too many of these types of ?spray and pray? email marketing activities.

The many unnecessary elements in the email (image) creates too much friction. This type of communication need to deliver a crystal clear message. A message with as little friction as possible.

Get the 360 Degree Dialogue Brief to learn more about email marketing and other digital marketing techniques.

Moreover, I wonder why there is no clear benefit described in the email. Am I supposed to know what Laguna Tower is and why it is attractive? And even if I do, should I not be reminded of the attractiveness of this particular real estate property?

The USP ?in this email seems to be ?Move in now?. That would probably be great if the target audience craved that exact need. So that fails too. I think adding a line or two about the magnificence of this real estate property, its location, uniqueness, quality, facilities etc. would make a lot of sense.

The really really Ugly:
Is of course the landing page. This is a complete and utter failure. A contact form with absolutely no reference to the property ? let alone any information as to what I can expect will happen after I submit my details. Big fail!

In summary:
I did not make this up. This campaign was indeed received by my inbox today. But I think that the advertiser ? IFA Hotels and Resorts ? ?probably meant to direct traffic to their product page for this particular real estate property. But they didn?t.

And even if they had, I am not sure that their product page would have converted much better. ?Because while that page looks nice, looks in internet marketing can be very deceiving. Have a look for yourself here.??That page is all about ?feeling? and not a whole lot about actually giving a good visitor experience. What?s more the conversion funnel seems to be non existent.

After writing this little piece, I realize that it is very difficult for me to write these types of case studies. So in the future ?I?ll use screencam and accompany that with a bit of text. In fact, ?you can see my video commentary here?
